The purpose of this study was to determine whether susceptibility tensor imaging (STI) could overcome limitations of current techniques to detect tubules throughout the kidney. ⋯ STI was able to track tubules throughout the kidney, whereas DTI was limited to the inner medulla. STI provides a novel contrast mechanism related to local tubule microstructure and may offer a powerful method to study the nephron.

Low pH is associated with intervertebral disc (IVD)-generated low back pain (LBP). The purpose of this work was to develop an in vivo pH level-dependent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method for detecting discogenic LBP, without using exogenous contrast agents. ⋯ RROC imaging is a promising pH level dependent MRI technique that has the potential to be a noninvasive imaging tool to detect painful IVDs in vivo.

On the signal-to-noise ratio efficiency and slab-banding artifacts in three-dimensional multislab diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging.
Three-dimensional (3D) multislab diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging (EPI) has been suggested as an alternative for high-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging. In this work, the key components of the sequence are investigated, optimal scan parameter settings suggested, and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis, comparing 2D diffusion-weighted EPI and 3D multislab diffusion-weighted EPI, is performed. ⋯ In the low TR regime, T1 -saturation effects between adjacent slabs need to be taken in consideration to avoid slab-banding artifacts for multislab sequences. With the proposed correction methods the difference between the SNR-optimal TR and the TR where slab-banding artifacts become acceptable is reduced.

T2 quantification with multiecho sequences is typically impaired by the contribution of stimulated echoes to the echo decay due to B1 + inhomogeneity and slice profile effects. In this work, a compact signal model based on the generating functions approach, which accounts for both sources of error, is presented. ⋯ A correction for stimulated echoes is necessary to compute comparable T2 values. The presented approach provides a solution to this issue.

To achieve detection of glutamate (Glu), glutamine (Gln), and glutathione (GSH) by minimizing the N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) multiplet signals at 2.49 ppm using a echo time (TE) -optimized PRESS pulse sequence and a novel J-suppression radiofrequency pulse. ⋯ Reliable detection of Glu, Gln, and GSH was achieved. Glu and Gln levels were significantly higher in frontal lobe GM than in frontal lobe WM. It is feasible to use the proposed proton MR spectroscopy method to measure the kinetics of (13) C incorporation into Glu and Gln during infusion of (13) C labeled glucose.
