Epidemiological and Psychopharmacological Study About Off-Label Treatment in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Emergencies: A Tertiary/Single Center Experience.
The study used an epidemiological and pharmacological description of child and adolescent psychiatric emergencies (CAPEs), during which psychotropic medications are frequently administered as off-label therapies. ⋯ Off-label drug use in CAPEs is a recurrent clinical practice. An international agreement about off-label drugs is crucial to obtain standard long-term pharmacoepidemiological, safety, and efficacy data. Pharmacological pediatric trials and international guidelines are also required to regulate pharmacological treatments of CAPEs, most of all in emergency settings.

Is the Early Diagnosis of Pediatric Stroke Possible in the Emergency Department?
Pediatric stroke is a neurological emergency. Knowing the predictive clinical markers for childhood stroke will help in early diagnosis and patient management. This study aims to (1) evaluate patients admitted to the pediatric emergency department (PED) with acute neurological signs and/or symptoms who underwent neuroimaging and (2) determine the clinical warning signs for the early recognition of stroke. ⋯ Childhood stroke is a neurological emergency that requires a multidisciplinary approach. Early stroke diagnosis is vital for treatment and prognosis. With respect to sudden neurological deficits, particularly dysarthria, altered consciousness, hemiplegia, and hemiparesis, should alert clinicians to stroke. In addition, interdepartmental cooperation is essential both in the rapid recognition of stroke and the treatment and follow-up processes.

Evaluating the Clinical Impact of a Novel Pediatric Emergency Medicine Curriculum on Asthma Outcomes in Belize.
Respiratory-related complaints prompt most pediatric visits to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority's (KHMHA) Emergency Department (ED) in Belize. We developed and taught a novel pediatric respiratory emergencies module for generalist practitioners there. We assessed the curriculum's clinical impact on pediatric asthma emergency management. ⋯ The curriculum positively impacted clinical outcomes leading to earlier albuterol administration, increased PRAM score use, obtaining less chest radiographs, and decreased admission rates. The timeliness of systemic steroid administration was unaffected.
