Multicenter StudyPediatric Emergency Medicine Training: A Survey of Current Status in Latin America.
Pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) is a relatively new and rapidly evolving subspecialty in many countries. The purposes of this study were to describe the characteristics and to find common/shared practices in current available PEM fellowship programs across Latin America. ⋯ In Latin America, postgraduate programs in pediatric emergencies are a response to a need for health systems. Being an innovative specialty, it surpassed each country's own challenges, until it was able to reach an internationally standardized level, with a great diversity of pedagogical methodology, which the product has been to offer a high quality of emergency care to children.

Randomized Controlled TrialInfant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Quality While Walking Fast: A Simulation Study.
This study focuses on the characteristics (feasibility, resuscitation quality, and physical demands) of infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the forearm during fast walking, performed by a trained lay rescuer. ⋯ In conclusion, pediatric walking CPR is feasible although it represents a slight quality decrease in a simulation infant CPR setting. The option "CPR while walking fast to a safe place" seems to be suitable in terms of safety both for the victim and the rescuer, as well as CPR quality in special circumstances.

Pediatric Emergency Department Return Visits Within 72 Hours: Caregivers' Motives and Analysis of Ethnic and Primary Language Disparities.
In the United States, approximately 2.2% to 5% of children discharged from the emergency department (ED) return within 72 hours. There is limited literature examining caregivers' reasons for return to the ED, and none among Hispanics and Spanish-speaking caregivers. We sought to examine why caregivers of pediatric patients return to the ED within 72 hours of a prior ED visit, and assess roles of ethnicity and primary language. ⋯ Most caregivers returned to the ED because their child's condition was not better or had worsened. Ethnicity and language were not associated with variations in reasons for return. Non-Hispanic and English-speaking caregivers were less likely to recall being informed of time to improvement and may require additional intervention.

Recognition and Management of Pediatric Sepsis in a Resource-Limited Emergency Department in Mwanza, Tanzania: A Qualitative Study.
The World Health Organization aims to reduce worldwide under-five mortality rates (U5MR), with a focus on resource-limited settings (RLS). Tanzania reports a mean U5MR of 54 per 1000 live births, largely due to treatable infectious diseases that may lead to sepsis, accounting for 40% of the under-five deaths. Bugando Medical Centre in Mwanza, Tanzania represents a resource-limited setting in Sub-Saharan Africa and estimates a 14% pediatric mortality rate. We sought to better understand provider experience in recognizing and managing pediatric sepsis in the emergency department (ED) at Bugando Medical Centre in Mwanza, Tanzania. ⋯ This qualitative study identified patient, provider, and health care system-related factors that influence the emergency care of children with suspected sepsis in a quaternary hospital in Mwanza, Tanzania. These factors may serve as a framework for educational opportunities to improve the early recognition and management of pediatric sepsis in a resource-limited setting.

Evaluation of the Utilization of FilmArray Meningitis/Encephalitis in Children With Suspected Central Nervous System Infection: A Retrospective Case Series.
The etiology of central nervous system infections is often difficult to establish. FilmArray meningitis/encephalitis (ME) panel is a multiplex polymerase chain reaction for rapid identification of 14 pathogens. The aim of this study was to evaluate potential real-life contributions of the use of this method in the pediatric population. ⋯ FilmArray ME panel identified an etiological agent in cases in which conventional CSF analysis failed, providing potential clinical contributions to the management of such cases.
