Clinical and Laboratory Characteristics Predicting the Severity of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Children: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.
Carbon monoxide poisoning (COP) is extremely common throughout the world. The purpose of this study was to assess the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics predicting the severity COP in children. ⋯ Carbon monoxide poisoning progressed more severely in children presented with neurological symptoms and have elevated red cell distribution width and mean platelet volume. Even in severe COP cases, satisfactory results have been obtained with early and appropriate treatment.

Single-Center Retrospective Review of the Presentation and Initial Care of Esophageal Button Battery Impactions 2007-2020.
The aims of this study were to characterize the patient population and initial presentation and care of esophageal button battery ingestion and provide descriptive data including factors affecting accurate diagnosis, duration of battery exposure, and battery removal. ⋯ This study describes the initial presentation and care of a large cohort of pediatric esophageal button battery ingestion. It emphasizes the continued need for primary prevention, prompt identification, and removal of these batteries. There are many challenges in caring for these patients involving multiple pediatric disciplines, and guidelines encompassing a multidisciplinary approach would be beneficial.

Frontline Medical Professionals' Ability to Recognize and Respond to Suspected Youth Sex Trafficking.
Many youth sex trafficking victims visit health care facilities while being trafficked. Little is known regarding whether frontline medical professionals recognize risk factors or are aware of effective interviewing approaches to identify and intervene for youth victims. The aim of the present study was to assess frontline medical professionals' knowledge of youth sex trafficking, adolescent development, and forensically informed interviewing to provide guidance for professional training. ⋯ Frontline medical professionals are lacking in their knowledge of youth sex trafficking, interviewing, and especially adolescent development. An area in which interventions can be targeted is with training (because it emerged in a significant interaction). Training could combat unrepresentative depictions of victims, improve understanding of common victim characteristics, and highlight how forensically informed interviewing can improve medical professionals' ability to gather crucial history about victims' experiences and needs.

Is HbA1c an Indicator of Diabetic Ketoacidosis Severity in the Pediatric Population?
Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) reflects how well blood glucose is controlled and is one of the strongest predictors of chronic complications of diabetes mellitus. The degree of acidosis helps determine the severity of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) (mild: pH 7.2-7.3; moderate: pH 7.1-7.2; severe: pH <7.1) and guides the level of care and predicts outcome. Many studies have implicated that higher HbA1c levels lead to recurrent DKA. ⋯ Blood pH and HbA1c returned a negative correlation (correlation coefficient, -0.557; P = 0.005). The HbA1c level correlated positively with the 3 groups of DKA (correlation coefficient, 0.595; P = 0.01). A higher A 1c was associated with more severe DKA.

The Epidemiology of Pediatric Basketball Injuries Presenting to US Emergency Departments: 2011-2020.
The purpose of this study is to describe the national epidemiology of basketball-related injuries in children and adolescents presenting to US emergency departments (EDs) from 2011 to 2020 and to quantify the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ Basketball remains a frequent cause of injury, especially in adolescents. The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly reduced the frequency of basketball-related injuries, but did not affect the type and body location of injuries presenting to the ED.
