Describing the Patient Population of a Pediatric Emergency Department Based on Visit Frequency.
A small number of children in the United States use a disproportionate share of emergency healthcare services. Our study objective was to examine characteristics associated with frequent pediatric emergency department (PED) utilization. ⋯ Although the percentage of frequent users to a PED in 2017 was low, they made up a disproportionate share of total visits. Differences between persistent and incidental frequent PED users suggest that these subgroups may benefit from tailored interventions to reduce frequent PED utilization.

Effectiveness of a Reliable Toxicological Analysis for a Correct Diagnosis of Acute Intoxication in Pediatrics: 2-Year Experience of an Analytical Toxicological Laboratory.
This study aimed to assess the role of the laboratory of toxicology as a support for a correct diagnosis of intoxication through the application of a reliable analytical approach, critically designed to meet pediatric needs. ⋯ An analytical approach critically designed to minimize misinterpretation of laboratory data and able to provide reliable results for a wide number of substances in a time compatible with the urgency represents a useful support for a correct diagnosis of intoxication in pediatrics.

Observational StudySurvival Rates After Pediatric Traumatic Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Suggest an Underappreciated Therapeutic Opportunity.
Children with traumatic arrests represent almost one third of annual pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs). However, traumatic arrests are often excluded from study populations because survival posttraumatic arrest is thought to be negligible. We hypothesized that children treated and transported by emergency medical services (EMS) personnel after traumatic OHCA would have lower survival compared with children treated after medical OHCA. ⋯ More than 8 of 10 children with EMS treated and transported OHCA achieved return of spontaneous circulation. Despite lower survival rates than medical OHCA patients, almost one third of children with a traumatic etiology survived throughout the study period. Future research programs warrant inclusion of children with traumatic OHCA to improve outcomes.

The aim of this study was to compare demographic characteristics, medical care, and outcomes among patients with assault-related concussion (ARC) versus sports and recreation-related concussion (SRC). ⋯ This study highlights potential disparities in the initial evaluation and outcomes of pediatric concussion patients based on mechanism of injury. Patients with ARC were less likely to receive a concussion-specific diagnostic evaluation and reported a greater impact on educational outcomes, suggesting differences in concussion diagnosis and management among assault-injured patients. Further examination in larger populations with prospective studies is needed to address potential inequities in concussion care and outcomes among patients with ARC.
