Periocular Facial Scald Burns in Children: Is Ophthalmology Consultation Necessary?
Criteria that predict the need for ocular injury treatment in children who suffer periocular facial scald burns are not known. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence and management of ocular injuries among children sustaining facial scald burns and to determine predictors of injuries requiring additional treatment. ⋯ Ocular injury after periocular facial scald burns is an infrequent finding. Among children with partial-thickness periocular facial scald burns, initial evaluation and treatment without ophthalmology consultation are appropriate. Ophthalmic antibiotic ointment is an appropriate initial treatment in most symptomatic patients, with ophthalmologic consultation being limited to children without symptomatic improvement.

Observational StudyA Statewide Study of the Epidemiology of Emergency Medical Services' Management of Pediatric Asthma.
Little is known about emergency medical services' (EMS') management of pediatric asthma. This study's objective was to describe the demographic, clinical, and geographic characteristics of current EMS' management of pediatric asthma in the state with the fourth-largest pediatric population. ⋯ This statewide study demonstrated low rates of EMS administration of ipratropium bromide and systemic corticosteroids, both evidence-based treatments for asthma exacerbations. Targeted EMS education should attempt to increase utilization of both those medications. In addition, the feasibility and efficacy of EMS administration of oral systemic corticosteroids for children should be explored.

Incidence and Geographic Distribution of Injuries Due to Falls Among Pediatric Communities of Maryland.
Falls are the leading cause of pediatric injury and account for the majority of emergency department injury visits, costing US $5 billion in medical costs annually. Epidemiology of pediatric falls has primarily been studied at single hospital centers and has not been analyzed statewide. We assessed pediatric falls across Maryland and geographically mapped them by census tract and block group. ⋯ Pediatric fall injuries comprise a large volume of emergency department visits yet have a low mortality. Geographic mapping shows that fall incidence varies across the state and persists over time. Statewide geographic information can be used to focus resource management and target prevention strategies.

Evaluation of the Efficacy and Safety of 3 Different Management Protocols in Pediatric Diabetic Ketoacidosis.
Management protocols for pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) vary considerably among medical centers. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of 3 different fluid protocols in the management of DKA. ⋯ Severity of acidosis and dehydration are associated with the development of cerebral edema. It can be concluded that fluid therapy with higher Na content and a constant maintenance rate may present less risk for the patient with DKA.

Feasibility of Point-of-Care Ultrasound for Diagnosing Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis in the Emergency Department.
This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for diagnosing hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) in the emergency department (ED). ⋯ Point-of-care ultrasound is accurate and useful for diagnosing HPS and improved the ED patient flow by reducing EDLOS and door-to-disposition time in non-HPS patients.
