Socioeconomic Status and Analgesia Provision at Discharge Among Children With Long-Bone Fractures Requiring Emergency Care.
Inadequate treatment of painful conditions in children is a significant and complex problem. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of socioeconomic status on the provision of analgesic medicines at discharge in children treated emergently for a long-bone fracture. ⋯ Socioeconomic status is associated with different nonopioid analgesic prescription patterns in children treated in the ED for a long-bone fracture, but had no effect on opioid analgesic prescriptions.

Randomized Controlled TrialDistraction Using Buzzy or Handheld Computers During Venipuncture.
Venipuncture is one of the most frequently performed painful procedures in children. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of 2 analgesic strategies for venipuncture in children in a specific setting like a blood-drawing center. ⋯ Analgesia provided by Buzzy or by a handheld computer was not significantly different in children undergoing venipuncture in a blood-drawing center, with the great proportion of them reporting no or mild pain during procedure.

Epistaxis in children is one of the most common causes for seeking professional medical help. Patients may be treated by several disciplines with various approaches to pediatric epistaxis. We reviewed cases of pediatric epistaxis from an otorhinolaryngologist's point of view. ⋯ Epistaxis in children is seldom serious. However, hemorrhagic diathesis needs to be kept in mind as a potential cause of epistaxis. In most cases, careful instruction of the patients and the relatives concerning nasal mucosal care is sufficient. If cauterization is necessary, silver nitrate coagulation should be preferred over electrocoagulation.

Case ReportsSupraventricular Tachycardia as the Initial Presentation of New-Onset Lupus: A Case Report.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, autoimmune, multisystem disorder that can sometimes be life-threatening. The presentation varies widely given the wide range of clinical and serological manifestations coupled with the disease's ability to affect any organ. Prognosis depends on the organ systems involved, as well as the severity of the involvement. ⋯ Unfortunately for our patient, he had several poor prognostic factors on his initial presentation prior to any treatment being started, including renal disease, male, age (17 years), low socioeconomic status, African American race, and high disease activity. Systemic lupus erythematosus is the great mimicker and can present in a variety of ways. Given its ability to involve virtually any organ system, it is important to consider it on the differential diagnoses, especially in patients with a strong family history.

Randomized Controlled TrialDoes Receiving a Text Message Reminder Increase Follow-up Compliance After Discharge From a Pediatric Emergency Department?
Compliance with recommended follow-up from the pediatric emergency department (PED) has been shown to be poor. This study evaluated whether a text message reminder to the caregivers after discharge from the PED improved compliance with recommended primary care follow-up. ⋯ In this randomized controlled study, a text message reminder to caregivers did not improve compliance for PED patients. However, caregivers of younger children were more likely to complete follow-up as recommended by the PED physician compared with caregivers of older children.
