Hypothermia as an Outcome Predictor Tool in Pediatric Trauma: A Propensity-Matched Analysis.
Hypothermia is an independent risk factor for mortality in adult trauma patients. Two small studies have shown similar results in pediatric trauma patients. Temperature is not included in any pediatric trauma assessment scores. This study sought to compare mortality and various descriptive outcomes between pediatric hypothermic and normothermic trauma patients. ⋯ Hypothermia has been shown to be a significant prognostic indicator in the pediatric trauma patient with further potential application. Future studies are indicated to evaluate the incorporation of hypothermia into the Pediatric Trauma Score not only to help predict injury severity and mortality but also to improve appropriate and expeditious patient transfer to pediatric trauma centers and potentially facilitate earlier intervention.

Case ReportsIdentification of an Infected Urachal Cyst Using Point-of-Care Ultrasound.
This case describes a 6-year-old girl who presented to the pediatric emergency department with 3 days of fever and suprapubic pain in the setting of 1 month of worsening, dull abdominal pain. On presentation, she had a tender, erythematous, and fluctuant mass on her lower abdomen. Point-of-care ultrasound was used to identify an abnormal fluid collection anterior to her bladder, suspicious for an infected urachal cyst. In this case, point-of-care ultrasound helped identify this uncommon finding in a timely fashion, which expedited definitive care and prevented unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation.

Predictors of Severe Clinical Course in Children With Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas, which is produced by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon-containing substances, and causes significant tissue and organ damage in the common event of CO poisoning. This study aims to evaluate the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of patients diagnosed with CO poisoning in the emergency department and to determine the factors associated with severe course in the acute phase of poisoning. ⋯ Glasgow Coma Scale score, leukocyte count, and troponin T level may be beneficial in predicting clinical outcomes and tailoring therapy in children with CO poisoning.

An Interrupted Time-Series Analysis of Pediatric Emergency Department Visits During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic.
The objective of this study was to estimate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on pediatric emergency department (PED) visits after declaration of stay-at-home orders within British Columbia, Canada, and the change in cases by acuity and age for 6 months during the pandemic. ⋯ The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has had a dramatic and lasting impact on the number of PED visits, with contracted rates 6 months into the pandemic. Further increase in acuity-adjusted rate of admissions after stay at home orders suggests that individuals may be delaying arrival to the emergency department. Further assessment is needed to determine if patients are seeking care through other venues or not seeking care altogether.

Case ReportsMorel-Lavallée Lesion of the Knee in the Young Athlete: About 2 Cases After Sports Trauma.
Differential diagnosis of soft tissue swelling on exposed body parts in the young athlete is large and mostly includes benign self-limiting conditions, once underlying lesion to the bone, the cartilage, and the ligaments is excluded. Morel-Lavallée lesion represents a rare soft tissue injury requiring prompt intervention to ensure favorable outcome. ⋯ Morel-Lavallée lesion is a rare entity in the pediatric population, although underreporting due to unfamiliarity with the diagnosis is highly probable. Raising awareness among professionals in charge of young athletes should allow for better reporting as well as for elaboration of a standardized treatment plan, including rapid intervention and early return to play.
