Utilizing Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to Identify Pediatric Trauma Patients Needing Lifesaving Interventions: A Prospective Study.
The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate the role of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in identifying pediatric trauma patients who required lifesaving interventions (LSIs). ⋯ Pediatric trauma patients with somatic NIRS values <70% within 30 minutes of ED arrival have an increased odds of requiring LSIs. Among LSIs, pediatric trauma patients requiring thoracostomy was significant. The role of NIRS in incrementally improving the identification of critically injured children in the ED and prehospital setting should be evaluated in larger prospective multicenter studies.

Impact of a Faster Computed Tomography Scanner on Sedation for Pediatric Head Computed Tomography Scans in 2 Large Emergency Departments-A Retrospective Study.
Children in the emergency department (ED) often require sedation for head computed tomography (CT) to ensure adequate image quality. Image acquisition time for a head CT using a conventional single-source CT scanner is approximately 12 seconds; however, after installation in November 2017 of 2 new dual-source dual-energy CT scanners, that time decreased to 1 to 3 seconds. We hypothesized that fewer patients would require sedation using the faster CT scanners. ⋯ After installation of a dual-source dual-energy CT scanner, fewer patients required sedation to complete head CT in the pediatric ED. Faster image acquisition time decreased the need for deep sedation.

ReviewLipid Emulsion Treatment for Drug Toxicity Caused by Nonlocal Anesthetic Drug in Pediatric Patients: A Narrative Review.
Lipid emulsion (LE) has been used to treat children with cardiovascular collapse induced by toxic doses of nonlocal anesthetics with high lipid solubility. We aimed to analyze case reports on LE administration for resuscitation of toxicity induced by these drugs in pediatric patients. ⋯ Lipid emulsion treatment may be effective in ameliorating intractable cardiovascular depression when systemic toxicity caused by drugs, including cardiac sodium channel blockers, is unresponsive to supportive treatments.

Evaluation of the Validity and Reliability of ANKUTRIAGE, a New Decision Support System in Pediatric Emergency Triage.
The intensity of emergency services is an increasing health problem all over the world, necessitating an effective triage system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the "ANKUTRIAGE" in children. ⋯ ANKUTRIAGE demonstrated high agreement with clinical outcomes and with proven triage systems and reflected high reliability between users. ANKUTRIAGE will enable a more standardized and practical triage, especially in crowded pediatric emergency departments and in situations where triage is performed by health professionals with different experience and professions.

Initial Pain Assessment and Management in Pediatric Burn Patients Presenting to a Major Trauma Center in Saudi Arabia.
Pediatric burn injury is a traumatic experience for affected children and their families. Burn pain is frequently undertreated and may adversely affect patient experience and outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the current practice of initial pediatric burn pain assessment and management at a major trauma center in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. ⋯ Most pediatric patients presenting with burns had pain assessment, but a substantial proportion of children were not managed using recommended age-specific tools. The use of age-specific tools was not necessarily associated with delivery of analgesia. For pediatric burns, prompt delivery of analgesia should be prioritized with pain assessment using age-appropriate tools being recommended, but optional.
