Comparative StudyCombined uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and radiofrequency tongue base reduction for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome.
In this study, we compare the objective results of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) combined with tongue base radiofrequency reduction (TBRF) with standard UPPP treatment of obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). ⋯ Stage I patients were usually successfully treated with UPPP only. However, patients allocated to stage II or III will benefit from the addition of TBRF to standard UPPP. Many UPPP-plus-TBRF patients in this study aborted further recommended TBRF treatments after subjective improvement and therefore objective results for this group, although improved in comparison to stage II and III patients treated with UPPP only, may not represent maximal potential improvement.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a highly malignant tumor that is histologically similar to ductal carcinoma of the breast. This article presents the clinicopathologic features of 15 patients with SDC arising in the salivary glands. The majority of patients were male and aged 65 years or older. ⋯ There was an extensive cervical lymph node involvement (73%). Distant metastasis was the most common cause of failure. Although SDC exhibits an unpredictable clinical course, total parotidectomy with neck dissection and adjunctive radiation therapy appear to be appropriate for local and regional control of this aggressive neoplasm.

Clinical TrialKetoprofen for postoperative pain after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and tonsillectomy: two-week follow-up study.
In our previous study, we reported that both uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and tonsillectomy are associated with unacceptable intense pain during the first 24 hours after surgery. To investigate the pain progression at home, we followed the same 53 patients for 14 days after surgery. Twenty-two patients underwent tonsillectomy and 31 patients underwent UPPP. ⋯ Both UPPP and tonsillectomy are associated with intense postoperative pain. Standard ketoprofen capsules are too short-acting to ensure undisturbed sleep.

Psychosocial adjustment in patients surgically treated for laryngeal cancer.
To assess the psychosocial adjustment in 62 patients surgically treated for cancer of the head and neck. Study design and setting Forty-one patients were grouped as having had radical surgery (total laryngectomy) and 21 as having had functional surgery (horizontal supraglottic laryngectomy or partial vertical surgery). The Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self Report (PAIS-SR) was used for the evaluation. ⋯ Information collected in this way may facilitate improved rehabilitation and thus better quality of life.
