Randomized Controlled Trial
Randomized controlled clinical trial on the evaluation of bacteriostatic and cariostatic effects of a novel povidone-iodine/fluoride foam in children with high caries risk.
To investigate the bacteriostatic and cariostatic effect of a novel povidone-iodine/fluoride foam in children at high risk for caries. ⋯ As far as bacteriostatic and cariostatic effects are concerned, clinical application of povidone-iodine/fluoride foam shows no superiority over the regular fluoride foam during a 1-year period. Evidence is still lacking for the combination use of povidone-iodine and fluoride to achieve a better caries-prevention effect in a high-caries-risk population.

This article describes a technique for the delivery of local anesthetic to the masseteric nerve just before it innervates the masseter muscle. As the mandibular division (V3) of the trigeminal nerve exits foramen ovale, the anterior division of V3 along with the masseteric nerve travels in the infratemporal fossa. Eventually, the masseteric nerve passes through the mandibular notch to innervate the masseter muscle. ⋯ The masseteric nerve block is an effective technique for obtaining anesthesia in the whole masseter muscle. This peripheral nerve block provides another modality for the treatment of acute and chronic masseter muscle pain. The masseteric nerve block can also be used diagnostically to verify the source of pain.

Garlic burn as self-inflicted mucosal injury--a case report and review of the literature.
Garlic is considered a valuable herbal medicine and has been used for centuries for treatment of various ailments. Along with its benefits comes some adverse effects. The present case describes chemical burn of oral mucosa caused by crushed garlic. ⋯ The patient was referred to the Department of Endodontics for further treatment of the toothache. Garlic burn should be considered in the differential diagnosis for chemical burn if the burn is not found to be associated with other common factors, and history taking should include questions regarding use of herbal products, home remedies, and alternative medicine. Possible adverse effects of these methods should be considered.

Needle-less local anesthesia: clinical evaluation of the effectiveness of the jet anesthesia Injex in local anesthesia in dentistry.
To clinically evaluate the jet injection Injex (Rösch AG Medizintechnik) using 2 different anesthetic solutions, and to compare the jet injection and the standard needle injection techniques. ⋯ The anesthetic solution should be combined with a vasoconstriction agent when the Injex technique is implemented.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Efficacy of 1% ropivacaine gel for topical anesthesia of human oral mucosa.
To evaluate the efficacy of 1% ropivacaine for topical anesthesia in dentistry. ⋯ All topical anesthetics were similar in reducing pain to needle insertion. EMLA-60 promoted longer duration of soft tissue anesthesia.
