Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialSymptomatic urinary tract infection in women in primary health care. Bacteriological, clinical and diagnostic aspects in relation to host response to infection.
To evaluate rapid diagnostic tests for bacteriuria in women with symptoms of urinary tract infection (UTI), and to analyse bacteriological and clinical findings in relation to host response to infection. ⋯ In women with a high probability of bacteriuria, i.e. those with symptoms of lower UTI, examination for pyuria and urinary nitrite offers high diagnostic efficacy. If either or both tests are positive urine cultures can be omitted.

Underprivileged area score, ethnicity, social factors and general mortality in district health authorities in England and Wales.
To analyse the relation of ethnicity, social deprivation (Underprivileged area, UPA-score), social class V, unemployment and overcrowding on age- and sex-standardized mortality ratio (SMR). ⋯ This paper shows that social deprivation, unemployment and overcrowding were related to mortality in district health authorities in England and Wales. The finding that ethnicity was inversely related to general mortality might be important and needs to be further analysed.

Non-migrainous headache, neck or shoulder pain, and migraine--differences in association with background factors in a city population.
To study the pattern of association of background factors with reported migraine, non-migrainous headache, and neck or shoulder pain. ⋯ Our findings underscore that migraine is reported by people with psychosocial backgrounds other than those of people who report chronic headache and neck or shoulder pain.

Diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis in Finnish primary care. Use of imaging techniques.
To observe the effect of imaging techniques on the diagnostic pattern of sinusitis in primary care. ⋯ When possible, ultrasound is widely used in diagnosing sinusitis in Finnish primary care. The use of ultrasound slightly diminished the numbers of sinusitis diagnoses but the techniques of using and interpreting ultrasound findings need to be improved.

To investigate hospital referrals by general practitioners, subsequent hospital events, and discharge letters. ⋯ The variation of the referral rates between the individual general practitioners was large. The small number of participating general practitioners (n = 29) did not permit valid explanations for this variation. The referring general practitioner rarely receives discharge letters from secondary care providers.
