How to maintain equity and objectivity in assessing the communication skills in a large group of student nurses during a long examination session, using the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
While development, testing, and innovation of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) are common in the international literature, studies from the United States of America (USA), Australia, and the United Kingdom (UK) predominate. There is little known about OSCE use in European countries, such as Italy, where other than cost analysis, there is little reporting of OSCE use or validation. ⋯ The study confirmed the validity of the OSCE method in ensuring equity and objectivity of communication skills assessment in a large population of nursing students for the purpose of certification throughout the duration of the examination. This has important implications for nurse education and practice as the extent to which OSCE approaches, while deemed objective, are culturally sensitive or valid and reliable across cultures is not clear. This is something that requires further research and examination in this field.

Testing nursing students' clinical judgment in a patient deterioration simulation scenario: Development of a situation awareness instrument.
Situation awareness may be used to operationalize nursing students' clinical judgment of patient deterioration simulation scenarios. ⋯ This instrument appears as a promising research tool, although it still needs to be tested with other populations and in other patient deterioration simulation scenarios.

Creating a journal club competition improves paediatric nurses' participation and engagement.
To improve journal club participation, innovative approaches are required but few have been described. It was unknown if adding an element of competition, to an established journal club, would increase nurses' participation. ⋯ A competition format can increase nurses' journal club attendance and participation. Further work is required to establish applicability of this format to other settings.

How the context of ambulance care influences learning to become a specialist ambulance nurse a Swedish perspective.
Ambulance emergency care is multifaceted with extraordinary challenges to implement accurate assessment and care. A clinical learning environment providing opportunities for mastering these essential skills is a key component in ensuring that prehospital emergency nurse (PEN) students acquire the necessary clinical competence. ⋯ Our findings suggest the need for appraisal of the significance of the clinical supervisor, the ambulance environment, and student vulnerability. The broad spectrum of conditions in combination with infrequent assignments make simulation necessary. However, the unique possibilities provided for meeting patients and relatives in their own environments offer the PEN student excellent opportunities for learning how to make assessments.

Beginning and advanced students' perceptions of the use of low- and high-fidelity mannequins in nursing simulation.
There is little research evidence that demonstrates the difference between the use of low- and high-fidelity mannequins in assisting students to acquire their skills when students are at different points in their nursing education experience. ⋯ Students' perceptions of simulation experiences using high-fidelity mannequins were found to be higher in contrast to their perceptions of experiences using low-fidelity mannequins.
