To investigate the prognostic significance of serum procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with sepsis and those with septic shock. ⋯ Serum PCT and CRP have good clinical diagnostic and prognostic value for patients with sepsis and septic shock. Kinetic studies of PCT and CRP can improve sensitivity and accuracy when evaluating the prognosis of patients with sepsis and those with septic shock.

Heterozygous purinergic receptor p2x gene ( P2RX2) c.178G>T (p.V60L) mutations can lead to progressive hearing loss (HL) and increased susceptibility to noise. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. A combination of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) technology with clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein (Cas)9-mediated gene editing may provide a promising tool to study gene function and treat hereditary deafness in humans. ⋯ Heterozygous and homozygous P2RX2-mutated hiPSC lines are good models to investigate the pathological mechanisms of P2RX2 mutations in HL pathogenesis. Our findings confirmed our hypothesis that it is feasible and convenient to introduce precise point mutations into genomic loci of interest to generate gene-mutated hiPSC models.

Compression screws and buttress plate versus compression screws only for Hoffa fracture in Chinese patients: a comparative study.
To compare compression screws and buttress plate (CS plus BP) with compression screws only (CS) in treating patients with Hoffa fracture. ⋯ Fixation with CS plus BP for Hoffa fracture is effective and reliable, and may provide more adequate stability and better outcomes versus CS only.

Insertion depth of nasotracheal tubes sized to fit the nostril: an observational study.
Nasotracheal (NT) intubation is commonly applied during head and neck surgery. However, improper tube size and depth may cause complications. In the current study, we investigated whether NT tubes are being appropriately used in terms of size and depth in adult patients. ⋯ Care should be taken to determine the insertion depth after placing an NT tube that has been sized to fit the nostril. Moreover, NT tubes of the same diameter may be required in various lengths.
