Change in intraocular pressure within 1 week of phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation using Adatocel.
To examine the change in intraocular pressure (IOP) within 1 week of phacoemulsification and foldable posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL) implantation using Adatocel (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose 2% [HPMC]). ⋯ Severe postoperative IOP spikes in nonglaucomatous patients after uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery are rare. The type of implanted PC IOL and the mode of anesthesia had no significant effect on postoperative IOP. Total removal of the ophthalmic viscosurgical device, even when using HPMCs such as Adatocel, is necessary to prevent postoperative IOP spikes.

Effect of growth factors on proliferation and expression of growth factor receptors in a human lens epithelial cell line.
To investigate the effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and transforming growth factor beta 2 (TGFbeta2) on proliferation of a human lens epithelial cell line (HLEC-SRA 01/04); the effect of bFGF and TGFbeta2 on proliferation of human lens epithelial cells (HLECs); and the expression of bFGF, EGF, IGF-1, and TGFbeta2 receptors in an HLEC-SRA 01/04 cell line. ⋯ The data showed that bFGF and TGFbeta2 are strong mitogens for HLEC. The HLEC-SRA 01/04 cell line derived from HLEC reacted to growth factors, with cell proliferation only to a lesser extent. Such quiescence of these cells, when compared with cells in primary culture, cannot be explained by the lack of respective receptors for growth factors. Further investigation of growth factor-induced responses of both cell types will provide new insight into the proliferative processes involved in postoperative secondary cataract formation.

Incidence and causes of ocular surgery cancellations in an ambulatory surgical center.
To report the incidence and analyze potentially preventable causes of ocular surgery cancellations. ⋯ Among ambulatory ophthalmic surgeries, there was a higher incidence of late cancellations in pediatric cases. Late cancellation rates were highest in cases scheduled in the winter, especially in February. Of the reasons documented for cancellations, 41% were considered "preventable" with proper preoperative counseling and instructions. The costs of late cancellations to the particular institution are estimated to be at least $100 000 per year, or nearly 1 month of scheduled surgeries in a 2-year period.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparative study of 2 anesthesia techniques for pediatric refractive surgery.
To compare the effectiveness of 2 anesthesia techniques for pediatric refractive surgery, propofol/fentanyl and ketamine/midazolam. ⋯ Propofol offered some advantages for brief procedures outside the traditional operating rooms. It is short acting, and has a rapid offset resulting in shorter postoperative monitoring and a smoother recovery profile. It has greater potential for respiratory depression than ketamine. Hence, greater vigilance and experience with the pediatric airway is recommended with its use.
