To determine whether antibiotic and bronchodilator treatment of acute bronchitis in patients without lung disease is efficacious. ⋯ Most studies showed no significant difference between drug and placebo, and the two studies that did showed only small clinical differences. Albuterol had an impressive advantage over erythromycin. Antibiotics should not be used in the treatment of acute bronchitis in healthy persons unless convincing evidence of a bacterial infection is present.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Effects of an inpatient geriatrics rotation on internal medicine residents' knowledge and attitudes.
The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of a geriatrics-focused acute medicine inpatient rotation and the presence or absence of a geriatrician as attending physician on knowledge about and attitudes toward older patients and the field of geriatrics. ⋯ An intensive integrated acute medicine rotation in geriatrics improved residents' knowledge of geriatric medicine. The presence of a geriatrics-trained attending physician was not necessary for this improvement. Residents' attitudes toward geriatric medicine and their geriatrics education were generally positive and were not influenced by this experience.

Comparative Study
Race, resource use, and survival in seriously ill hospitalized adults. The SUPPORT Investigators.
To examine the association between patient race and hospital resource use. ⋯ Seriously ill African-Americans received less resource-intensive care than other patients after adjustment for other sociodemographic factors and for severity of illness. Some of these differences may be due to differential use of subspecialists. The observed differences in resource use were not associated with a survival advantage for white or other race patients.
