Is information on genetic determinants of obesity helpful or harmful for obese people?--A randomized clinical trial.
Although more and more genetic information is available, it is unclear whether this information is helpful for patients. Therefore, we assessed the positive and negative effects of informing obese people about the genetic etiology of being overweight. ⋯ Consultations in obesity can be helpful in general. These consultations should include genetic information if people have a family history of obesity.

Screening for posttraumatic stress disorder in VA primary care patients with depression symptoms.
Unrecognized posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common and may be an important factor in treatment-resistant depression. Brief screens for PTSD have not been evaluated for patients with depression. ⋯ Most depressed VA primary care patients report a history of trauma, and one third may have comorbid PTSD. Our 4-item screen has useful LRs for scores of 0 and 3. Modifying item rating options may improve screening characteristics.

A randomized trial of telemedicine-based collaborative care for depression.
Evidence-based practices designed for large urban clinics are not necessarily portable into smaller isolated clinics. Implementing practice-based collaborative care for depression in smaller primary care clinics presents unique challenges because it is often not feasible to employ on-site psychiatrists. ⋯ Collaborative care can be successfully adapted for primary care clinics without on-site psychiatrists using telemedicine technologies.

Awareness, accuracy, and predictive validity of self-reported cholesterol in women.
Although current guidelines emphasize the importance of cholesterol knowledge, little is known about accuracy of this knowledge, factors affecting accuracy, and the relationship of self-reported cholesterol with cardiovascular disease (CVD). ⋯ Women with obesity, smoking, untreated hypertension, or sedentary lifestyle have decreased awareness of their cholesterol levels. Self-reported cholesterol underestimates measured values, but is strongly related to CVD. Lack of awareness of elevated cholesterol is associated with increased risk of CVD.

Training primary care clinicians in maintenance care for moderated alcohol use.
To evaluate whether training primary care clinicians in maintenance care for patients who have changed their drinking influences practice behavior. ⋯ Systemic prompts and training in the maintenance care of alcohol use disorders in remission might increase primary care clinicians' inquiries about the alcohol history as well as appropriate assessment and intervention after an initial inquiry.
