Meta AnalysisMeta-analysis of the effects of prokinetic agents in patients with functional dyspepsia.
Functional dyspepsia (FD) is often treated with prokinetic agents; however, the efficacy of prokinetic agents in patients with FD has been questioned recently. The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of the effects of prokinetic agents in patients with FD. ⋯ The data clearly indicate that prokinetic agents are significantly more effective than placebo in the treatment of FD. Although FD is a chronic condition, efficacy was assessed over short periods. Long-term randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the effect.

Helicobacter pylori eradication prevents recurrence after simple closure of perforated duodenal ulcer.
Evidence remains inconclusive as to whether eradication of Helicobacter pylori prevents ulcer relapse after simple closure of a perforated duodenal ulcer. This study was conducted to determine the effect of H. pylori eradication using a quadruple drug regimen along with a probiotic on ulcer recurrence after perforation closure. ⋯ Eradication of H. pylori significantly reduces the relapse of duodenal ulcer after simple closure of perforation. Anti H. pylori therapy must be recommended for all H. pylori positive patients after simple closure of a perforated duodenal ulcer.

Association between interleukin-1 gene polymorphisms and Helicobacter pylori infection in gastric carcinogenesis in a Chinese population.
Helicobacter pylori is a major cause of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease and a definite carcinogen for gastric adenocarcinoma. However, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms are not fully understood. Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a key cytokine involved in H. pylori-induced gastric inflammation. The present study aimed to determine polymorphisms of IL-1B and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RN) genes and their association with H. pylori infection and gastroduodenal diseases in Chinese patients. ⋯ IL-1B-511 T allele is associated with H. pylori infection in non-cardiac gastric cancer in a Chinese population. The IL-1B-511 gene polymorphism appears to play an important role in gastric carcinogenesis in Chinese patients with H. pylori infection.

Antifibrotic effects of tetrandrine on hepatic stellate cells and rats with liver fibrosis.
Anti-inflammation strategies are one of the proposed therapeutic approaches to hepatic fibrosis. Tetrandrine (C(38)H(42)O(8)N(2), molecular weight: 622; Tet), an alkaloid isolated from the Chinese medicinal herb Stephania tetrandra, has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory activity in pulmonary diseases. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the in vitro and in vivo effects of Tet on hepatic fibrosis. ⋯ Tetrandrine exerts antifibrotic effects in both HSC-T6 cells and in rats with DMN-induced fibrosis.
