The supraclavicular (intermediate) and supra-acromial (lateral) branches of supraclavicular nerves contribute to the innervation of the thorax, shoulder, and neck. Despite their clinical and surgical interest, they are not often considered for descriptive anatomy. The goal of this work was to clarify the morphometric knowledge of these two branches and to discuss the clinical relevance of the anatomical features. ⋯ In case of deficiency of these nerves, pain or sensitive deficit can occur without motor trouble. The factors of acute or chronic injury are direct compression, nerve stretching, repetitive stresses, and direct wound. Moreover, several neck or shoulder surgical approaches are dangerous for these nerves.

Few reports are found in the extant medical literature regarding the vastoadductor membrane. This membrane effectively creates a subcompartment within the subsartorial canal. The lower limbs of 16 embalmed adult cadavers were dissected to identify the vastoadductor membrane and note its measurements. ⋯ Perforating venous branches from the great saphenous vein were identified in 22% of specimens. As compression of the femoral artery at the adductor hiatus is a well-recognized entity, the clinician may also try to explore potential compression of this vessel more proximally by an overlying vastoadductor membrane. The authors would also hypothesize that due to the interconnection between the adductor magnus and vastus medialis by the vastoadductor membrane that a potential synergy exists between the functions of these two muscles.

Restoring the joint line level is one of the surgical challenges during revision of total knee arthroplasty. The position of the tibial surface is commonly estimated by its distance to the apex of fibular head, but no study evaluating this distance accurately has been published yet. The purpose of this work was to study the distance between the knee joint line and the apex of the fibular head and the proximal tibia, particularly the tibial tuberosity. ⋯ Besides, the review of the 25 bilateral cases did not show statistically significant side difference but the descriptive analysis showed too large discrepancies for the joint line-fibular head apex distance to be used as a landmark. We conclude that the fibular head apex cannot be used as a morphologic landmark to determine the knee joint line position. Its interest in clinical and surgical practice must be discussed.

To locate and describe the various efferences of the plexus in order to make it easier to avoid nerve lesions during pelvic surgery on women patients through a better anatomical knowledge of the inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP). ⋯ The ureter is the crucial point of reference for the IHP and its efferences and acts as a real guide for identifying the anterior inferior angle or top of the IHP, the origin of the vaginal nerve, the level of the ureterovesical junction and the division of the vesical nerve into its two medial and lateral branches. Dissecting underneath and inside the ureter and the uterine artery involves a risk of lesion of the vaginal nerve and its uterovaginal branches. Further forward, between the intersection and the ureterovesical junction, dissecting and/or coagulating under the ureter involves a risk of lesions to the vesical nerve, which are likely to explain the phenomena of denervation of the anterior floor encountered after certain hysterectomies and/or surgical treatments of vesicoureteral reflux.

The introduction of a problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum at the School of Medicine of the University of Melbourne has necessitated a reduction in the number of lectures and limited the use of dissection in teaching anatomy. In the new curriculum, students learn the anatomy of different body systems using PBL tutorials, practical classes, pre-dissected specimens, computer-aided learning multimedia and a few dissection classes. The aims of this study are: (1) to assess the views of first- and second-year medical students on the importance of dissection in learning about the anatomy, (2) to assess if students' views have been affected by demographic variables such as gender, academic background and being a local or an international student, and (3) to assess which educational tools helped them most in learning the anatomy and whether dissection sessions have helped them in better understanding anatomy. ⋯ Both first- and second-year students, regardless of their gender, academic background, or citizenship felt that the time devoted to dissection classes were not adequate. Students agreed that dissection deepened their understanding of anatomical structures, provided them with a three-dimensional perspective of structures and helped them recall what they learnt. Although their perception about the importance of dissection changed as they progressed in the course, good anatomy textbooks were perceived as an excellent resource for learning anatomy. Interestingly, innovations used in teaching anatomy, such as interactive multimedia resources, have not replaced students' perceptions about the importance of dissection.
