Precise knowledge of the structural connectivity of white matter fascicles could yield new insights into function and is important for neurosurgical planning. Therefore, we aimed to provide a detailed map of the cortical terminations of the inferior fronto-occipital fascicle (IFOF), with special emphasis on putative inter-individual variations and hemispheric asymmetries. ⋯ Our results provide a clinically relevant map of IFOF's cortical terminations, including intra- and inter-individual variations. Right-left differences in connectivity patterns might be related to known functional asymmetries in the human brain, and reinforce the general evidence that the IFOF likely supports distinct clinical features and functional roles according to the (affected) hemisphere, such as language and spatial attention.

The purpose of the study was to quantitatively evaluate the size of the quadratus lumborum and to precisely display its growth dynamics in the human foetus. ⋯ The fetal quadratus lumborum reveals neither sex nor bilateral differences. An increase in length and width of the growing quadratus lumborum follows in a commensurate fashion. The quadratus lumborum grows logarithmically with respect to its length, width, and cross-sectional area, and proportionately to age with respect to its surface area.

The aim of this work is to point out the intraspinal anatomical variations of nerve roots and their possible participation in radiculopathy. ⋯ This study allowed us to identify and describe unpublished intraspinal intradural anatomical variations of nerve roots, and their interrelationships throughout the spinal canal with their potential influence on the clinical picture. Anatomical preparations revealed a higher incidence of intraspinal intradural variations, particularly between sacral roots. Reliance of their incidence of the plexus type was observed.

To evaluate the variations of the sternum and provide the prevalence of sternal foramen and its anatomical relationships. ⋯ The sternum is a very critical anatomic structure of the anterior chest wall with several variations that can be confused with pathologic conditions. Radiologists' familiarity with these variations is important for better radiologic evaluation in making differential diagnosis.

The extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) tendon normally inserts into the base of the proximal phalanx of the thumb. However, a distal insertion of the EPB tendon into the thumb interphalangeal joint has been reported in refractory cases of de Quervain's disease. We hypothesized that the EPB tendon is wider beyond the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint in patients with extended EPB. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the extensor tendon width and the point of distal insertion of the EPB tendon. ⋯ The extensor tendon width was wider in the extended EPB group than in the normal EPB group, suggesting that the differences in the EPB tendon width can be used to identify various anatomical variations in extended EPB.
