Review Case Reports
Clinical experience and management considerations with long-acting risperidone.
Risperidone is the first atypical anti-psychotic available in a long-acting injectable formulation. ⋯ A wide variety of patient groups may benefit from treatment with long-acting risperidone, including patients with suboptimal efficacy, particularly as a result of partial compliance, patients experiencing side-effects with another antipsychotic agent or those with a first episode of schizophrenia. Furthermore, long-acting risperidone, with its assured medication delivery, should improve patient compliance and assist patients in achieving remission, an important step towards functional recovery.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Efficacy and tolerability of twice-daily pregabalin for treating pain and related sleep interference in postherpetic neuralgia: a 13-week, randomized trial.
This trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of pregabalin dosed twice daily (BID) for relief of neuro-pathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). ⋯ Pregabalin, dosed BID, reduced neuropathic pain associated with PHN and was well tolerated. It also reduced the extent to which pain interfered with sleep. Pregabalin's effects were seen as early as week 1 and were sustained throughout the 13-week study.

To evaluate the safety, tolerability and efficacy of mirtazapine in patients with the primary diagnosis of chronic pain and concomitant depression in an open post-marketing surveillance study. ⋯ Despite the limitations of an open observational study, our findings suggest that mirtazapine is a safe and well-tolerated drug for use in daily clinical practice. It still remains unclear whether the reduction of pain, the enhancement of the depressed mood or the combination of both effects led to these results. Nevertheless, our data point to a potential beneficial effect of mirtazapine in the treatment of patients with pain and concomitant depression. However, more systematic research, including placebo-controlled studies, and further empirical testing are necessary.

To evaluate the effectiveness of select biologics, methotrexate (MTX), and other disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) in the management of adult rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in routine clinical practice. ⋯ These data from routine rheumatology clinical practice settings highlight the effectiveness of common biologic and DMARD therapies, and provide additional data beyond those of randomized, controlled trials.

The addition of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP-2) to the standard of care, consisting of soft tissue management and intramedullary nailing, in the BMP-2 Evaluation in Surgery for Tibial Trauma (BESTT) study led to a significantly better outcome for the patient. Reductions in fracture healing time, secondary interventions for delayed fracture healing and infection rates were observed with 1.50 mg/mL rhBMP-2 compared with the standard of care alone. In Germany the approximate cost of applying one dose of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) to an open tibial fracture is euro2970. ⋯ A sound economic model to assess the cost-effectiveness and budget impact of rhBMP-2 is required. Using medical data from the BESTT study the differences in fracture healing time, in reduction of secondary interventions for fracture healing and infection treatment can be transferred into economic savings. It is anticipated that the overall savings that can be achieved by rhBMP-2 treatment in open tibia fractures, offset the upfront price of rhBMP-2 and lead to net savings for health insurance companies.
