Comparative Study[Determination of glycosylated hemoglobin in clinical practice care of diabetes].
At the end of 1989 a transversal study to know the availability of glycosylated hemoglobin as a control parameter in diabetic patients was done. Two hundred and three physicians-specialists in diabetes-provided information on the fraction, technique and reference interval used in their clinical practice. 90 +/- 4% of the participants were able to obtain, in their settings, the determination of glycosylated hemoglobin. Regarding work-places it is outstanding that 36 +/- 15% of the physicians in primary care did not have the possibility to get this parameter determined. ⋯ There was no homogeneity in the reference intervals for HbA1 and HbA1c, considering different methodologies. The possibility to obtain different glycosylated hemoglobin determined, depends on the setting where the health care is being provided. It is important to know the reference interval of the Center where the determination is being done, in order to correctly interpret the glycosylated hemoglobin values of each patient.

[Prognostic factors in HIV-infected heroin addicts: a multivariate analysis of nonspecific serological factors in the evolution of the infection].
We present a prognostic analysis of the quantifying of serum levels of beta 2 microglobulin, neopterina, IL-2 soluble receptor and three major classes of immunoglobulins, in a group of 68 heroin-addicts infected by the human immune deficiency virus, type I, clinically assessed for a period of at least three years. High levels of any of these unspecific serologic factors were correlated with the illness progression. Survival curves were generated with the categorized variables, showed a significant decrease on the time interval prior to the diagnosis of AIDS, in the patients with these variables assigned on the higher groups, being neopterine and IgA the more predictive factors when the Cox proportional regression model is applied. We conclude that the quantifying of these unspecific serum factors provides a useful information regarding the clinical evolution of heroin-addicts with HIV infection.

[Decrease in the incidence of epidural hematomas surgically treated during coma after a lucid interval. Is this an index of quality of care?].
The level of consciousness prior to surgery has been analyzed in a series of 64 patients suffering epidural hematoma (EDH) who underwent surgery during the period from July 1987 to June 1989. The percentage of cases which underwent surgery in coma after a lucid interval have been compared in different periods of time (1978-80, 1981-82, 1983-84 and July 1987 to June 1989). ⋯ During the different periods of time the number of patients undergoing surgery in coma after a lucid interval were the following: 1979-80, 9 cases (26.5%); 1981-82, 17 cases (43.6%); 1983-84, 8 cases (20%) and during the last period, 1987-89, 7 cases (15.2%). The difference between the percentage of patients intervened in coma after a lucid interval in the previously referred periods of time was statistically significant (p 0.05).

Comparative Study[Treatment of acute pain in a general hospital: opinions of physicians and nurses].
A survey was carried amongst physicians and nurses of a general hospital, in order to know their opinion about acute pain treatment. Out of 106 physicians and 153 nurses questioned, 72 and 105 respectively answered the questionnaire. ⋯ Those questioned believed that approximately 30% of patients treated with opium derivatives for over a week could develop addiction problems. Our study confirmed the existence of inadequate attitudes towards the need for analgesics in patients with acute pain.
