Comparative Study[Glycosylated hemoglobin as a prognostic index of the appearance of vascular complications in diabetic patients].
One hundred and fourty seven diabetic patients of both sexes with ages between 40 and 65 (44% Type 1 and 56% Type II), were studied and followed for a period of five years in order to evaluate the possible association between blood glucose control and the appearance and progression of vascular complications. A clinical metabolic characterization was performed in all patients both at the beginning and at the end of the study. Process of the results after 5 years was carried out dividing the total study sample in two groups, A and B, according to the level of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1) at the beginning of the study (HbA1 less than 10% or greater than 10%). ⋯ A subset of 111 patients who did not present retinopathy at the beginning of the study were particularly analyzed, demonstrating in these cases a significant association between HbA1 levels at the beginning of the study and the appearance of retinopathy five years later. Type II diabetics particularly showed a 3 fold risk of developing this complication if their initial HbA1 levels were equal to or higher than 10%. This finding gives HbA1 determination a predictive value for the development of retinopathy and highlights the influence of glycemic control on the appearance and progression of this complication in diabetic patients.

Comparative Study[Apoprotein E phenotypes. A study of the population of Málaga].
The distribution of apoprotein E phenotypes in a randomly chosen population sample of Málaga was compared to other published studies performed in other countries, observing minimal differences in Caucasian populations but significant differences with oriental ethnic groups. Cholesterol and triglyceride plasma levels were not significantly different in the different apo E phenotypes. ⋯ The study of plasma triglyceride levels which were higher in the diabetic group, revealed a greater increase in phenotype E4/3 than in E3/3. These results support the idea about the complex relationship that exists between apo E phenotypes and some cardiovascular risk factors.

Comparative Study[Antilymphocytic sera versus azathioprine, combined with cyclosporin and steroids, in liver transplant. Comparison of the results at the intensive care unit and 2 years' follow-up].
The use of anti-lymphocyte globulins (ATG, ALG, OKT3) for the control or organ rejection in humans, has been of major importance both in preventing and treating organ rejection resistant to other treatments. We present here the results of our immunosuppression protocol using two different therapeutic associations. To the first group consisting of 29 patients, low doses of cyclosporine, steroids and anti-lymphocyte globulins were given, and to another group of 11 patients azathioprine was given together with cyclosporine and steroids at the same doses as in the first group. ⋯ The incidence of chronic rejections was similar in both groups (10.3% vs 8.9%). During the follow up period, the incidence of infections was higher in the group treated with azathioprine (13.7% vs 36.4%) as well as bacteremia episodes (17.2% vs 45.4%) (p less than 0.1). We also want to highlight that patients with graft complications (primary graft rejection) suffered infections (p less than 0,001) and had a higher mortality rate (p less than 0,05) in association to the infection.
