In this review the current situation of gene therapy is described in hematological diseases, immunological conditions, and cancer. In all of them, the principal objective of various approaches with gene therapy is transduction of therapeutic genes in most of target cells. ⋯ Consequently, vectors are one of the basic elements to optimize gene therapy approaches and protocols in view of the facts that we know that with liposomes less than 10% of cells are transduced, that retrovirus only infect cells in replication, and that adenovirus give rise to an important inflammatory response and a transitory transduction of the therapeutic gene. In addition recent approaches in cancer gene therapy with selective replication virus, suicidal genes, etc., are discussed.

[Paradoxical costal shift throughout inspiration (Hoover's sign) in patients admitted because of dyspnea].
To study the frequency and diagnostic usefulness of Hoover's sign (paradoxical costal shift throughout inspiration) in patients admitted because of dyspnea. ⋯ Hoover's sign is a frequent finding in patients admitted because of EPOC and is found only rarely in patients without obstructive pulmonary disease. This sign contributes useful information for the evaluation of patients admitted because of dyspnea.

[Effect of immunomodulator AM3 on the exacerbations in patients with chronic bronchitis: a systematic review of controlled trials].
Analyze the effect of AM3, an oral immunomodulator, on the exacerbations and on the use of antibiotics in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ The results of this systematic review show that AM3 has a clinical effect in the prevention of exacerbations of COPD patients because reduces significantly their number. This could be related to a slowing in the progression of the deterioration in the respiratory function with a potential impact on the quality of life of the patients. Furthermore, these data imply a positive therapeutic result and a possible decline in development of bacterial resistances secondary to the frequent and indiscriminate use of antibiotics in these patients.
