Comparative StudyIschemic preconditioning and remote ischemic preconditioning have protective effect against cold ischemia-reperfusion injury of rat small intestine.
To investigate the protective effect of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) and remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) against cold ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) associated with small bowel transplantation (SBT). ⋯ Both IPC and RIPC were found to ameliorate ischemia-reperfusion injury after rat SBT in the early phase. HO-1 may therefore play a protective role against cold IRI.

Comparative StudyDoes the length of the history influence the outcome of pneumatic reduction of intussusception in children?
Intussusception is the most common cause of acute abdomen in infants and preschool children. Nonoperative reduction using air enema is an established treatment in children with intussusception. The aim of this study was to determine whether length of the history influences the outcome of pneumatic reduction of intussusception in children? ⋯ Our data suggest that pneumatic reduction should be first-line treatment in all children with intussusception regardless of the length of the history.

Carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum induces anti-inflammatory response and hepatic oxidative stress in young rats with bacterial peritonitis.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) pneumoperitoneum on the intra-abdominal spread of bacteria, the local and systemic cytokine expression, and oxidant/antioxidant status in young rats with bacterial peritonitis. ⋯ Carbon dioxide (CO(2)) pneumoperitoneum is not associated with E. coli dissemination in the presence of local intra-abdominal infection. CO(2) pneumoperitoneum elicited systemic anti-inflammatory response at a specific time period and decreased hepatic antioxidant status in young rats with E. coli peritonitis.

Umbilical cord inverting technique: a simple method to utilize the umbilical cord as a biologic dressing for sutureless gastroschisis closure.
A sutureless gastroschisis closure provides a cosmetically appealing outcome. The umbilical cord is usually used as a covering material in a sutureless closure because it is a native tissue. However, during the staged closure with a silo placement, special attention is required to keep the umbilical cord moist. The authors report a simple technique to preserve the feasibility of the umbilical cord as a biologic dressing during the silo placement in staged gastroschisis closures.

Elevated inflammatory mediators and pulmonary hypertension after applying an extracorporeal circuit in a neonatal sepsis model.
We aimed to study the changes in cytokines, oxidative mediators, and pulmonary blood pressure in a neonatal sepsis model when applying an extracorporeal circuit (ECC). ⋯ Applying ECCs provoked a window of cytokines, free radicals elevation, and pulmonary hypertension which could be hazardous in critically ill newborns.
