Results of a practical protocol for management of prenatally detected hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction.
Several algorithms exist for the management of prenatally diagnosed hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). We utilize a conservative and practical approach emphasizing observation, with less frequent use of renal flow scans (RFS). We reviewed the results of 143 pediatric patients with congenital UPJO managed at our institution, focusing on surveillance and selective utilization of RFS, according to a standardized protocol. ⋯ Pyeloplasty may be performed safely in infants when indicated; however, the majority of children with UPJO can be managed conservatively. Spontaneous resolution of hydronephrosis and/or favorable prognosis was encountered in 87% of conservatively managed RU. The use of a standard US grading system, selective utilization of follow-up renal function testing, and parental compliance are important factors in successful management.

Case ReportsExtensive necrotising fasciitis in a 4-day-old neonate: a successful outcome from modern dressings, intensive care and early surgical intervention.
Necrotising fasciitis (NF) is a fulminant and life-threatening soft tissue infection, which leads to vascular thrombosis and cutaneous ischemia. We present our experience with extensive necrotising fasciitis in a 4-day-old neonate and stress the importance of early diagnosis, modern dressings including negative pressure therapy, prompt surgical debridement and intensive care to improve the survival and cosmetic outcome of children with NF.

The prognostic importance of trauma scoring systems in pediatric patients.
Traumas are among important causes of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric group. Our aim was to evaluate the predicting effects of general trauma scores on mortality and morbidity rates. ⋯ ISS was found to be more valuable than other trauma scoring systems for prognostic evaluation of pediatric trauma patients. On the other hand, blood glucose, AST, and ALT are easily available, cheap, and valuable alternative laboratory findings in prognostic evaluation.

Case ReportsIncarcerated femoral hernia with ovary and fallopian tube torsion in an infant: a rare occurrence.
Incarcerated femoral hernia with ovary and fallopian tube torsion is very rare in children. We herein report a case of incarcerated femoral hernia with ovary and fallopian tube torsion in a 7-month-old female who was diagnosed on the basis of operative findings. We released the torsion of the left fallopian tube. ⋯ Left salpingo-oophorectomy and McVay repair for femoral hernia were performed. She has experienced no recurrence of femoral hernia for 3 years. We must consider incarcerated femoral hernia in the differential diagnosis for infants with groin redness and swelling.
