Observational StudyRisk factors for post-induction hypotension in children presenting for surgery.
Preoperative factors have been correlated with pre-incision hypotension (PIH) in children undergoing surgery, suggesting that PIH can be predicted through preoperative screening. We studied blood pressure (BP) changes in the 12 min following the induction of anesthesia to study the incidence of post-induction hypotension and to assess the feasibility of predicting PIH in low-risk children without preoperative hypotension or comorbid features. ⋯ II.

Children with appendicitis on the US-Mexico border have socioeconomic challenges and are best served by a freestanding children's hospital.
The US-Mexico border is medically underserved. Recent political changes may render this population even more vulnerable. We hypothesized that children on the border present with high rates of perforated appendicitis due to socioeconomic barriers. ⋯ Children with low socioeconomic status did not have difficulty accessing care on the USA-Mexico border, but they were commonly misdiagnosed. Children were less likely to receive a CT, more likely to be correctly diagnosed and length of stay was shorter when patients presented to a freestanding children's hospital.

Analysis of water sports injuries admitted to a pediatric trauma center: a 13 year experience.
Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in children and adolescents. Injuries occurring during boating and recreational water sports are poorly described in the literature. Herein, we compare injuries from water sports to those resulting from motor vehicle collisions, which are better described in existing literature. ⋯ Overall, water sports injuries are similar in in-hospital mortality to motor vehicle collisions. They are more likely to result in penetrating trauma and more likely to require surgical intervention. Primary and secondary prevention strategies should specifically target personal watercraft usage and tourist populations.

Integrating lncRNAs and mRNAs expression profiles in terminal hindgut of fetal rats with anorectal malformations.
The detailed embryonic etiology and pathogenesis of anorectal malformations (ARMs) remains unclear. Recent studies have shown that gene expression abnormalities were the key factors that result in ARMs. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were reported as the 'transcriptional noise' within the genome. The expression profiles of lncRNA and mRNA remain less characterized in the pathogenesis of ARMs. Furthermore, the function of lncRNAs in the regulation of this process has not been investigated so far. Therefore, this current study was aimed to integrate lncRNA and mRNA expression profiles in terminal hindgut of ethylenethiourea (ETU)-induced ARM rats using Agilents lncRNA and mRNA co-expression microarrays. ⋯ From the above results, it can be suggested that these aberrant lncRNAs might participate in the pathogenesis of ARM, and our present work may provide new research directions for future studies of ARMs.

ReviewSurvival after emergency department thoracotomy in the pediatric trauma population: a review of published data.
The utility of EDT in the adult trauma population, using well-defined guidelines, is well established, especially for penetrating injuries. Since the introduction of these guidelines, reports on the use of EDT for pediatric trauma have been published, and these series reveal a dismal, almost universally fatal, outcome for EDT following blunt trauma in the child. This report reviews the clinical outcomes of EDT in the pediatric population. ⋯ Level IV.
