The aims of this study were to compare test-retest variability and accuracy measures between (1) manual palpation and a novel palpometer and (2) different force levels. Sixteen clinicians were instructed to target 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 kg on a force meter using manual palpation and the new palpometer (adjustable spring-coil with a small pin touching the examiner's hand when the correct pressure is reached). In all experiments, 10 consecutive measures of the force levels were recorded. ⋯ All outcome parameters had significantly lower values for the new palpometer than for manual palpation in a force-dependent manner (p<0.004). CVs and actual force levels were significantly different between all target levels (p<0.004). The new palpometer had low test-retest variability and provides a more accurate pressure stimulus than manual palpation.

The aim of the present study was to clarify the involvement of protein kinase Cγ (PKCγ) in the facial neuropathic pain following infraorbital nerve injury. We analyzed the change in PKCγ expression in the trigeminal spinal subnucleus caudalis (Vc) and upper cervical spinal cord (C1/C2) following chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (ION-CCI). We also studied ION-CCI-mediated mechanical nocifensive behavior in rats. ⋯ Intrathecal (i.t.) administration of the PKCγ inhibitor chelerythrine prevented an increase in the PKCγ expression in the ipsilateral Vc. Moreover, i.t. administration of chelerythrine annulled ION-CCI-mediated reduction in the head-withdrawal threshold. Taken together, these findings suggest that PKCγ expression in the Vc played an important role in the mechanism of orofacial static mechanical allodynia following trigeminal nerve injury.

Bell's palsy: the answer to the riddle of Leonardo da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa'.
The smile of the famed portrait 'The Mona Lisa' has perplexed both art historians and researchers for the past 500 years. There has been a multitude of theories expounded to explain the nature of the model's enigmatic smile. ⋯ Bell's palsy is more prevalent in women who are either pregnant or who have recently given birth. This paper postulates that the smile of the portrait's model was due to Leonardo da Vinci's anatomically precise representation of a new mother affected by Bell's palsy subsequent to her recent pregnancy.

The discovery of surgical anesthesia: discrepancies regarding its authorship.
The suppression of pain during surgical interventions has been a major achievement for humankind. Chronologically, in 1842, William E. Clarke, a chemist in Rochester (NY), provided Elijah Pope with ether for the purposes of tooth extraction. ⋯ These events gave rise to several disputes among their users (who are not very well-known today), who strove to claim that they had been the discoverers of surgical anesthesia, with a view to obtaining a series of patents and state sinecures. This article attempts to clarify certain discrepancies about the authorship of surgical anesthesia. The evidence suggests that surgical anesthesia first began to be applied in the field of dentistry.

Prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) plays important roles in the bone resorption of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis via specific prostaglandin receptors (i.e., EP1-EP4). In this study, the authors examined whether Prevotella intermedia regulates PGE(2) production and EP expression in human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (hPDLs); they also explored the potential signaling pathways involved in PGE(2) production. P. intermedia induced PGE(2) production and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in a dose- and time-dependent manner. ⋯ Specific inhibitors of extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, p38, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, and protein kinase C--but not c-AMP and protein kinase A--significantly attenuated the P. intermedia-induced COX-2 and PGE(2) expression. P. intermedia reduced EP1 expression in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The results indicate that the COX-2-dependent induction of PGE(2) by P. intermedia in hPDLs is mediated by multiple signaling pathways.
