Review Meta AnalysisSex differences in illness severity and mortality among adult intensive care patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
To investigate the association between sex and illness severity and mortality of ICU patients. ⋯ Women tend to have higher illness severity scores at ICU admission. Women also appear to have higher risk-adjusted mortality than men at ICU discharge and at 1 year. Given the heterogeneity and risk of bias in the existing literature, additional studies are needed to confirm or refute these findings.

Review Meta AnalysisEffect of different levels of PEEP on mortality in ICU patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome: systematic review and meta-analysis with trial sequential analysis.
To determine whether higher positive end- expiratory pressure (PEEP) could provide a survival advantage for patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) compared with lower PEEP. ⋯ Our results suggest that a lower PEEP ventilation strategy was non-inferior to a higher PEEP ventilation strategy in ICU patients without ARDS, with no increased risk of all-cause mortality and 28-day mortality. Further high-quality RCTs should be performed to confirm these findings.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyFrequency and risk factors of post-intensive care syndrome components in a multicenter randomized controlled trial of German sepsis survivors.
Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) is a combination of cognitive, psychiatric and physical impairments in survivors of critical illness and intensive care. There is little data on long-term co-occurrence of associated impairments. ⋯ Almost all study participants showed impairments associated with PICS in at least one domain. The proposed classification models for PICS appear to be too broad to identify specific risk factors beyond its individual components.

Clinical TrialHypocalcemia is associated with hypotension during CRRT: A secondary analysis of the Acute Renal Failure Trial Network Study.
We investigated the effect of potentially modifiable continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)-related treatment factors on the risk of severe hypotension. ⋯ Of the CRRT treatment factors studied, hypocalcemia with a serum ionized calcium <1.02 mmol/l was associated with a significantly increased risk of treatment-associated hypotension. Further studies will be required to assess whether treatment targets for serum calcium improve the risk of hypotension during CRRT.
