Clinical TrialHypocalcemia is associated with hypotension during CRRT: A secondary analysis of the Acute Renal Failure Trial Network Study.
We investigated the effect of potentially modifiable continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)-related treatment factors on the risk of severe hypotension. ⋯ Of the CRRT treatment factors studied, hypocalcemia with a serum ionized calcium <1.02 mmol/l was associated with a significantly increased risk of treatment-associated hypotension. Further studies will be required to assess whether treatment targets for serum calcium improve the risk of hypotension during CRRT.

Multicenter StudyAssociation between increased nonaerated lung weight and treatment failure in patients with de novo acute respiratory failure: Difference between high-flow nasal oxygen therapy and noninvasive ventilation in a multicentre retrospective study.
To determine the association between lung collapse and treatment failure in high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy (HFNC) or noninvasive ventilation (NIV). ⋯ Patients with a greater nonaerated lung weight had a higher risk of HFNC failure, but not of NIV failure.

Transferring home to die from critical care units: A scoping review of international practices.
To identify and characterise the international practices of transferring a dying patient home to die from critical care units. ⋯ Transferring patients home to die from critical care is a complex practice varying significantly across countries. Further research to address current knowledge gaps is important to inform policy and practice.

Observational StudyHelmet and face mask for non-invasive respiratory support in patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure: A retrospective study.
Non-invasive respiratory support could reduce the incidence of intubation in patients with Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure (AHRF). The optimal interface or modality of non-invasive respiratory support is debated. We sought to evaluate the differences between patients who succeeded or failed non-invasive respiratory support, with a specific focus on the type of non-invasive respiratory support (i.e. helmet CPAP versus face mask NIV). ⋯ Helmet CPAP and a lower fluid balance were independent predictors of a lower intubation rate in AHRF patients in ICU. Prospective studies aimed at identifying the optimal interface and modality of non-invasive respiratory support in AHRF patients are needed.

Development of a practically usable prediction model for quality of life of ICU survivors: A sub-analysis of the MONITOR-IC prospective cohort study.
As the goal of ICU treatment is survival in good health, we aimed to develop a prediction model for ICU survivors' change in quality of life (QoL) one year after ICU admission. ⋯ Though more long-term data are needed to ascertain model accuracy, in future, the PREPARE model may be used to better inform and prepare patients and their families for ICU recovery.
