Doppler-defined pulmonary hypertension in sepsis and septic shock.
The association of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in patients with sepsis is lesser understood. ⋯ In patients with sepsis and septic shock, PH is common and is noted to be associated with higher short and long-term mortality. Further studies are needed to understand the mechanisms by which PH is associated with outcomes.

Observational StudyDecreasing re-intubation using prophylactic noninvasive ventilation in elderly patients: A propensity-matched study.
Prophylactic noninvasive ventilation (NIV) reduces re-intubation in high-risk patients. However, its effects in elderly patients remain unclear. Here, we investigated the efficacy of prophylactic NIV in elderly patients after a planned extubation. ⋯ Elderly patients received benefits from prophylactic NIV after a planned extubation.

Comparative Study Observational StudyEpidemiology, lung mechanics and outcomes of ARDS: A comparison between pregnant and non-pregnant subjects.
We describe the epidemiology, lung mechanics and outcomes of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) complicating pregnancy. We also compare the outcomes of ARDS in pregnant and non-pregnant females. ⋯ ARDS complicating pregnancy is severe and is associated with high perinatal mortality. However, the outcomes of ARDS in pregnant females were similar to non-pregnant females.

Prescription patterns for routine EEG ordering in patients with intracranial hemorrhage admitted to a neurointensive care unit.
To examine clinical factors, including established electroencephalography (EEG) consensus recommendations, that may influence EEG-prescription in critically-ill intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients in the neurointensive care unit. ⋯ EEG appeared underused in ICH, since <50% of patients who fulfilled guideline criteria underwent EEG. Prescription of EEG was related to factors beyond those included in consensus recommendations. Validation of our findings and their association with outcome is required.

Prognostic nomogram for acute pancreatitis patients: An analysis of publicly electronic healthcare records in intensive care unit.
The mortality rate of severe acute pancreatitis (AP) is 20-30% even after admission to intensive care unit (ICU). Thus we aimed to develop a laboratory-based nomogram to identify AP patients at high risk for mortality. ⋯ The proposed nomogram gives rise to accurately prognostic prediction for critically AP patients admitted to ICU.
