Observational StudySerum total antioxidant capacity during the first week of sepsis and mortality.
Higher circulating total antioxidant capacity (TAC) concentrations have been found in non-survivor than in survivor septic patients at moment of sepsis diagnosis. The objectives of this study were to determine whether serum TAC levels during the first week of sepsis are associated with lipid peroxidation, sepsis severity, and sepsis mortality, and whether could be used as a prognostic biomarker. ⋯ The new findings of our study were that serum TAC levels during the first week of sepsis are associated with lipid peroxidation, sepsis severity, and sepsis mortality, and that could be used as a prognostic biomarker.

Observational StudyPredictive value of serum albumin levels on noradrenaline and fluid requirements in the first 24 h after admission to the Intensive Care Unit - A prospective observational study.
To determine the predictive value of serum albumin (SA) at admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) on the cumulative dose of noradrenaline, the fluids administered, the lactate level, and mortality during the first 24 h of ICU admission. ⋯ SA significantly predicts noradrenaline and fluid requirements as well as the change in lactate level during the first 24 h of ICU admission. Our observations have to be validated in another large cohort.

Hospital variability of postoperative sepsis and sepsis-related mortality after elective CABG surgery was not known in Australia. ⋯ Hospital variability of postoperative sepsis, in-hospital mortality and readmission after elective CABG existed between and within public and private hospitals.

Observational StudyStrong ion difference and CVVH: Different response during nadroparin versus citrate anticoagulation.
To determine the effect on strong ion difference of citrate as an anticoagulant during continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH). ⋯ Citrate anticoagulation results in a persistently high SIG during CVVH compared to nadroparin. This is associated with the presence of unmeasured anions such as citrate in the systemic circulation.
