Randomized Controlled TrialGranulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in patients presenting sepsis-induced immunosuppression: The GRID randomized controlled trial.
Septic shock is associated in some patients with a profound immunosuppression. We hypothesized that GM-CSF would reduce the occurrence of ICU-acquired infections in immunosuppressed septic patients. ⋯ GM-CSF had no effect on the prevention of ICU-acquired infection in sepsis immunosuppression, but any conclusion is limited by the early termination of the study leading to low number of included patients.

Trajectories of quality of life, return to work, psychopathology, and disability in survivors of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS): A three-year prospective cohort study (DACAPO).
Describe the long-term development of outcomes for survivors of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). ⋯ Most of recovery in HRQoL and RtW occur during the first 12 months, after which a plateau is reached, indicating a chronification for many patients. Contrary to this, however, psychopathological symptoms remain stable, except for depressive symptoms. [200 words].

Impact of increasing post-filter ionized calcium target on filter lifespan in renal replacement therapy with regional citrate anticoagulation: A before-and-after study.
Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) is the recommended method for anticoagulation in continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). However, the optimal post-filter ionized calcium (iCa) target level remains unclear. This study aims to assess the effect of increasing the post-filter iCa target level from 0.25-0.35 mmol/L to 0.30-0.40 mmol/L on filter lifespan until clotting during RCA-CRRT. ⋯ Increasing the post-filter iCa target level from 0.25-0.35 mmol/L to 0.30-0.40 mmol/L during RCA-CRRT does not reduce filter lifespan until clotting and may decrease unnecessary citrate exposure. However, the optimal post-filter iCa target should be individualized according to the patient's clinical and biological status.

Observational StudyAssociations of dipeptidyl-peptidase 3 with short-term outcome in a mixed admission ICU-cohort.
Biomarkers independently associated with outcome of intensive care unit (ICU) patients can improve risk assessment. The cytosolic protease dipeptidyl-peptidase 3 (DPP3) is released into the circulation upon cell necrosis. We aimed to investigate the prognostic properties of cDPP3 in a mixed-admission ICU cohort. ⋯ In a mixed-ICU cohort, cDPP3 concentrations after start of initial treatment were independently associated with both mortality and development of AKI. Therefore, measurement of cDPP3 can improve risk-stratification provided by established disease severity scores.

Observational StudyResting energy expenditure measured by indirect calorimetry in mechanically ventilated patients during ICU stay and post-ICU hospitalization: A prospective observational study.
The metabolic course during and after critical illness is unclear. We performed repeated indirect calorimetry (IC) measurements during ICU- and post-ICU hospitalization to determine resting energy expenditure (REE). ⋯ Critically ill mechanically ventilated patients were shown to have a resting energy expenditure (REE) > 110% of predicted REE on ICU admission day four and thereafter. Indirect calorimetry measurements suggest that the mean energy requirements during post-ICU hospitalization are higher than those in the ICU.
