Epidural cannulation is a difficult technique in the patient undergoing scoliosis repair, due to axial rotation of the vertebral bodies, as well as angulation of the spinal processes. This case series was performed to investigate whether ultrasonography could facilitate epidural insertion in patients with scoliosis, by assessing the degree of vertebral body rotation. ⋯ We conclude that ultrasonography may have a potential role to facilitate insertion of epidural catheters in patients with scoliosis.

Perioperative anesthetic management for Cesarean section of a parturient with gestational diabetes insipidus.
Gestational diabetes insipidus (GDI) is a rare endocrinopathy complicating about 4:100,000 deliveries. We present the case of a preterm parturient with GDI and severe hypernatremia (serum sodium concentration = 174 mmol.L(-1)) presenting for an urgent Cesarean section. ⋯ The careful perioperative management of GDI led to a favourable outcome of the mother and fetus.

Routine preoperative testing has been criticized as having little impact on perioperative outcomes. The purpose of this study is to identify the current practice of preoperative testing in ambulatory surgery. ⋯ Our survey has documented marked disparities in the practices of preoperative testing. A large proportion of the anesthesiologists indicated that age alone is not a criterion for preoperative ordering of ECG. Many anesthesiologists had no concern about eliminating preoperative testing in low-risk ambulatory surgery.
