Case ReportsHerpes zoster and meningitis due to reactivation of varicella vaccine virus in an immunocompetent child.
Neurologic complications from varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation are rare. In this article, we describe a previously immunized child who developed herpes zoster with meningitis. Vaccine strain of VZV was recovered from a skin swab and the cerebrospinal fluid. Reactivation of the vaccine strain of VZV should be recognized as a potential cause of meningitis in children.

Severe ocular reactions after neonatal ocular prophylaxis with gentamicin ophthalmic ointment.
In this study, we report 4 infants who developed severe ocular reactions after neonatal ocular prophylaxis with gentamicin ophthalmic ointment during a period of erythromycin ophthalmic ointment shortage. In light of this experience, gentamicin ophthalmic ointment should not be used as an alternative for neonatal ocular prophylaxis.

Case ReportsNeurologic manifestations of pediatric novel h1n1 influenza infection.
Reported neurologic manifestations of novel H1N1 influenza have included seizure, meningoencephalitis, and acute necrotizing encephalopathy. We describe the first series of pediatric patients presenting during the second wave of the US novel H1N1 pandemic, with protracted seizures, severe encephalopathy/encephalitis, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. In addition to prominent radiographic abnormalities, we provide the first observation and description of associated cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities.

Decline in rotavirus hospitalizations and health care visits for childhood diarrhea following rotavirus vaccination in El Salvador.
A recent postlicensure study from El Salvador showed that the monovalent rotavirus vaccine conferred 76% protection against rotavirus hospitalizations. We further examined the impact of rotavirus vaccination on the national burden of childhood diarrhea to help assess the total public health benefits of vaccination. ⋯ Rotavirus vaccination had a substantial public health impact on rotavirus disease and overall diarrhea events in El Salvador. Important age-related changes in diarrheal incidence emphasize the need for ongoing rotavirus surveillance after vaccine introduction.
