Comparative StudyMasseter tissue oxygen saturation predicts normal central venous oxygen saturation during early goal-directed therapy and predicts mortality in patients with severe sepsis.
This study aimed to investigate, in patients with severe sepsis, the correlation between central venous oxygen saturation and tissue oxygen saturation at different levels. ⋯ This study suggested that in the early 6-hr resuscitation period, masseter tissue oxygen saturation accurately identified patients with severe sepsis and central venous oxygen saturation >70%. Both masseter tissue oxygen saturation and deltoid tissue oxygen saturation but not central venous oxygen saturation or thenar tissue oxygen saturation are strong predictors of 28-day mortality.

Comparative StudyClinical outcomes after telemedicine intensive care unit implementation.
To examine clinical outcomes before and after implementation of a telemedicine program in the intensive care units of a five-hospital healthcare system. ⋯ After 3 yrs of deployment of a telemedicine intensive care unit program, this retrospective observational study of mortality and length of stay outcomes included all cases admitted to an adult intensive care unit and found statistically significant decreases in severity-adjusted hospital length of stay of 14.2%, intensive care unit length of stay of 12.6%, and relative risk of hospital mortality of 23%, respectively, in a multihospital healthcare system.

Survey of the current status of teaching intensive care medicine in Australia and New Zealand medical schools.
The place of Intensive Care Medicine education within Medical Schools in Australia and New Zealand was investigated by survey in 2009. ⋯ A survey was undertaken to determine the extent of intensive care medicine training undertaken in medical student courses in Australia and New Zealand. A small majority of university hospitals had mandatory programs, with nearly a quarter having neither a mandatory or optional program. This is a higher proportion than identified in previous international surveys, but the results indicate considerable deficits requiring ongoing development within the undergraduate program.

Comparative StudyNicotinamide inhibits nuclear factor-kappa B translocation after transient focal cerebral ischemia.
We explored the putative anti-inflammatory effects of nicotinamide against experimental stroke. ⋯ Nicotinamide effectively attenuated postischemic nuclear factor-kappa]B activation and exhibited robust anti-inflammatory actions against ischemic stroke.
