Short-Term Dietary Restriction Rescues Mice From Lethal Abdominal Sepsis and Endotoxemia and Reduces the Inflammatory/Coagulant Potential of Adipose Tissue.
Visceral adipose tissue is a major site for expression of proinflammatory and procoagulant genes during acute systemic inflammation. In this study, we tested whether the loss of fat mass by dietary restriction would remove the major source of these factors resulting in improved tolerance to sepsis and endotoxemia. ⋯ Short-term dietary restriction drastically improved the survival outcome of middle-aged mice during both polymicrobial sepsis and sterile endotoxemia. Improved survival was accompanied by a significantly attenuated inflammatory response in adipose tissue, which is likely due to alterations of both fat mass quantity and qualitative changes, including a reduction in macrophage populations.

Serum Amyloid P Contained in Alveolar Fluid From Patients With Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Mediates the Inhibition of Monocyte Differentiation into Fibrocyte.
Alveolar fibrocytes are monocyte-derived mesenchymal cells associated with poor prognosis in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Our aims were to determine the following: 1) the ability of monocytes from acute respiratory distress syndrome patients to differentiate into fibrocytes; 2) the influence of the acute respiratory distress syndrome alveolar environment on fibrocyte differentiation; and 3) mediators involved in this modulation, focusing on serum amyloid P. ⋯ The presence of fibrocytes in the lung during acute respiratory distress syndrome could result in a balance between higher ability of monocytes to differentiate into fibrocytes and the inhibitory effect of the alveolar environment, mainly dependent on serum amyloid P.

To evaluate maternal world region of birth, as well as maternal country of origin, and the associated risk of admission of 1) a mother to a maternal ICU, 2) her infant to a neonatal ICU, or 3) both concurrently to an ICU. ⋯ Women from Africa and the Caribbean and, in particular, Ghana and Jamaica, are at higher risk of admission to ICU around the time of delivery, as are their newborns.

Comparative StudyLung Functional and Biologic Responses to Variable Ventilation in Experimental Pulmonary and Extrapulmonary Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.
The biologic effects of variable ventilation may depend on the etiology of acute respiratory distress syndrome. We compared variable and conventional ventilation in experimental pulmonary and extrapulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome. ⋯ Variable ventilation improved lung function in both pulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome and extrapulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome. Variable ventilation led to more pronounced beneficial effects in biologic marker expressions in pulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome compared with extrapulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome but preserved E-cadherin in lung tissue only in extrapulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome, thus suggesting lower damage to epithelial cells.
