Long-Term Survival in Adults Treated With Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Respiratory Failure and Sepsis.
The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in adults with respiratory failure and sepsis is steadily increasing, but the knowledge on long-term survival in this group is scarce. The aim of the present study was to investigate the 5-year survival rates and causes of late death in this group of patients. ⋯ Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatment in adult patients with respiratory failure and sepsis can be lifesaving in appropriately selected patients. For patients who survive the first months after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatment, long-term survival seems good, especially in patients treated for infections.

ReviewWhich Models Can I Use to Predict Adult ICU Length of Stay? A Systematic Review.
We systematically reviewed models to predict adult ICU length of stay. ⋯ No models completely satisfy our requirements for planning, identifying unexpectedly long ICU length of stay, or for benchmarking purposes. Physicians using these models to predict ICU length of stay should interpret them with reservation.

Randomized Controlled TrialHemodynamic Effect of Different Doses of Fluids for a Fluid Challenge: A Quasi-Randomized Controlled Study.
The objectives of this study are to determine what is the minimal volume required to perform an effective fluid challenge and to investigate how different doses of IV fluids in an fluid challenge affect the changes in cardiac output and the proportion of responders and nonresponders. ⋯ The doses of fluids used for an fluid challenge modify the proportions of responders in postoperative patients. A dose of 4 mL/Kg increases transient stop-flow arm arterial-venous equilibrium pressure and reliably detects responders and nonresponders.

Multicenter StudySubarachnoid Hemorrhage Patients Admitted to Intensive Care in Australia and New Zealand: A Multicenter Cohort Analysis of In-Hospital Mortality Over 15 Years.
The primary aim of this study was to describe in-hospital mortality in subarachnoid hemorrhage patients requiring ICU admission. Secondary aims were to identify clinical characteristics associated with inferior outcomes, to compare subarachnoid hemorrhage mortality with other neurological diagnoses, and to explore the variability in subarachnoid hemorrhage standardized mortality ratios. ⋯ Subarachnoid hemorrhage patients admitted to ICU in Australia and New Zealand have a high mortality rate. Year of admission beyond 2003 did not impact risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality. Significant variability was noted between institutions. This implies an urgent need to systematically evaluate many aspects of the critical care provided to this patient group.
