Multicenter StudyLack of Early Improvement Predicts Poor Outcome Following Acute Intracerebral Hemorrhage.
There are limited data as to what degree of early neurologic change best relates to outcome in acute intracerebral hemorrhage. We aimed to derive and validate a threshold for early postintracerebral hemorrhage change that best predicts 90-day outcomes. ⋯ Lack of clinical improvement at 24 hours robustly predicted poor outcome and showed good discrimination for individual patients who would do poorly. These findings are useful for prognostication and may also present as a potential early surrogate outcome for future intracerebral hemorrhage treatment trials.

Observational StudyDecrease in Histidine-Rich Glycoprotein as a Novel Biomarker to Predict Sepsis Among Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.
Many biomarkers for sepsis are used in clinical practice; however, few have become the standard. We measured plasma histidine-rich glycoprotein levels in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome. We compared histidine-rich glycoprotein, procalcitonin, and presepsin levels to assess their significance as biomarkers. ⋯ Histidine-rich glycoprotein levels were low in patients with sepsis and were significantly related to mortality in systemic inflammatory response syndrome population. Furthermore, as a biomarker, histidine-rich glycoprotein may be superior to procalcitonin and presepsin.

Observational StudyThe Cumulative Partial Pressure of Arterial Oxygen Is Associated With Neurological Outcomes After Cardiac Arrest Treated With Targeted Temperature Management.
Hyperoxia could lead to a worse outcome after cardiac arrest. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the cumulative partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2) and neurological outcomes after cardiac arrest treated with targeted temperature management. ⋯ In a new method for PaO2 analysis, cumulative exposure to hyperoxia was associated with neurologic outcomes in a dose-dependent manner. Greater attention to oxygen supply during the first 6 hours appears to be important for outcome after cardiac arrest.

Observational StudyPrevalence of Anxiety and Depression Symptomatology in Adolescents Faced With the Hospitalization of a Loved One in the ICU.
ICU experience is linked to anxiety and depression symptomatology in family members of patients. Minors may be forbidden from visiting. To bring practices in line with evidence, we determined the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptomatology in adolescents visiting a relative in the ICU. ⋯ Anxiety and depression symptomatology is common in adolescent family members of ICU patients. An open visiting policy for adolescents is recommended, with visit planning, information meetings, and individual support from ICU staff.
