Meta AnalysisQuantifying the Impact of Alternative Definitions of Sepsis-Associated Acute Kidney Injury on its Incidence and Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
To derive a pooled estimate of the incidence and outcomes of sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) in ICU patients and to explore the impact of differing definitions of SA-AKI on these estimates. ⋯ SA-AKI is common in ICU patients with sepsis and carries a high risk of death and persisting kidney impairment. The incidence and outcomes of SA-AKI vary significantly depending on the definition of AKI used.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyEvaluating the Sum of Eye and Motor Components of the Glasgow Coma Score As a Predictor of Extubation Failure in Patients With Acute Brain Injury.
To evaluate the association between the pre-extubation sum of eye and motor components of the Glasgow Coma Score (GCS-EM) and odds of extubation failure in patients with acute brain injury being liberated from mechanical ventilation. ⋯ In this large, contemporary, multicenter cohort of patients with acute brain injury, we found no association between the GCS-EM and odds of extubation failure. However, few patients had a pre-extubation GCS-EM less than or equal to 8, and the possibility of a true prognostic association in patients with low scores is not excluded.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe Lipid Intensive Drug Therapy for Sepsis Phase II Pilot Clinical Trial.
Low cholesterol levels in early sepsis patients are associated with mortality. We sought to test if IV lipid emulsion administration to sepsis patients with low cholesterol levels would prevent a decline or increase total cholesterol levels at 48 hours. ⋯ Administration of IV lipid emulsion to early sepsis patients with low cholesterol levels did not influence change in cholesterol levels from enrollment to 48 hours.

Meta AnalysisMortality Due to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Latin America.
Mortality due to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a major global health problem. Knowledge of epidemiological data on ARDS is crucial to design management, treatment strategies, and optimize resources. There is ample data regarding mortality of ARDS from high-income countries; in this review, we evaluated mortality due to ARDS in Latin America. ⋯ ARDS mortality in Latin America remains high, as in other regions. These results should constitute the basis for action planning to improve the prognosis of patients with ARDS (PROSPERO [CRD42022354035]).
