Impact of Bronchiectasis on Postoperative Pulmonary Complications after Extra-Pulmonary Surgery in Patients with Airflow Limitation.
The impact of bronchiectasis on the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) after extra-pulmonary surgery in patients with airflow limitation is not well elucidated. A retrospective analysis of 437 patients with airflow limitations, including 62 patients with bronchiectasis, was conducted. The analysis revealed that bronchiectasis was associated with increased PPC (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.73; P = 0.001), which was especially significant in patients who did not use bronchodilators (aOR, 3.24; P = 0.002). Our study indicates that bronchiectasis is associated with an increased risk of PPC following extra-pulmonary surgery in patients with airflow limitation, and bronchodilators may prevent PPC in these patients.

Analysis of Risk Factors for Myringosclerosis Formation after Ventilation Tube Insertion.
This study examined possible risk factors for myringosclerosis formation after ventilation tube insertion (VTI). ⋯ Older age, serous effusion, type 2 VT, presence of post-VTI perforation, and frequent VTI may be risk factors for myringosclerosis after VTI; the severity of myringosclerosis may vary based on the duration of effusion and frequency of VTI.

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Peripheral Arterial Disease in Patients with Lumbar Spinal Stenosis and Intermittent Claudication: CT Angiography Study.
It can be difficult to differentiate between vascular and neurogenic intermittent claudication. The exact diagnosis often cannot be made on clinical evidence and ultimately requires imaging. Perioperative screening for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) patients is important because untreated PAD increases the risk of severe vascular events. The aims of this study were to study the prevalence of PAD in LSS patients with symptoms of intermittent claudication, and to study the independent risk factors for PAD. We specified the cases where it was necessary to perform computed tomography angiography (CTA) as a preoperative screening tool in surgery for spinal stenosis. ⋯ The current study showed that man gender, diabetes and hypertension were the greatest risk factors for PAD. We conclude that man patients with diabetes and/or hypertension should be put under serious consideration for routine CTA examination when under evaluation for LSS and intermittent claudication.

Recent Decrease in Organ Donation from Brain-Dead Potential Organ Donors in Korea and Possible Causes.
In 1999, the Organ Transplantation Act legalized organ donation from brain-dead patients. As a result of the government's continued efforts, the number of brain-dead donors steadily increased from 2002 through 2016. However, the number has declined since 2017. This paper examined the possible reasons behind the decline in brain-dead organ donation. ⋯ Fewer eligible donors in spite of an increase in brain-dead potential organ donors suggests that reduction in these donations resulted mainly from factors associated with family consent. Among such factors, implementation of the Life-sustaining Treatment Act appears to be most important. Abolition of family compensation and the incident in which a brain-dead donor's remains were mistreated may also have influenced family consent.

Out-of-Hospital Cohort Treatment of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients with Mild Symptoms in Korea: an Experience from a Single Community Treatment Center.
The outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused a worldwide pandemic. Less than 6 weeks after the first confirmed cases in Korea, the patient number exceeded 5,000, which overcrowded limited hospital resources and forced confirmed patients to stay at home. To allocate medical resources efficiently, Korea implemented a novel institution for the purpose of treating patients with cohort isolation out of hospital, namely the Community Treatment Center (CTC). ⋯ A total of 309 patients were admitted to our CTC. During the first two weeks, 7 patients were transferred to the hospital because of symptom aggravation and 107 patients were discharged without any complication. Although it is a novel concept and may have some limitations, CTC may be a very cost-effective and resource-saving strategy in managing massive cases of COVID-19 or other emerging infectious diseases.
