Beneficial Effect of Chloroquine and Amodiaquine on Type 1 Diabetic Tubulopathy by Attenuating Mitochondrial Nox4 and Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress.
Oxidative stress induced by chronic hyperglycemia is recognized as a significant mechanistic contributor to the development of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Nonphagocytic nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase 4 (Nox4) is a major source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in many cell types and in the kidney tissue of diabetic animals. We designed this study to explore the therapeutic potential of chloroquine (CQ) and amodiaquine (AQ) for inhibiting mitochondrial Nox4 and diabetic tubular injury. ⋯ We substantiated the protective actions of CQ and AQ in diabetic tubulopathy associated with reduced mitochondrial Nox4 activation and ER stress alleviation. Further studies exploring the roles of mitochondrial Nox4 in the pathogenesis of DKD could suggest new therapeutic targets for patients with DKD.

Case ReportsLate Onset Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis in a Patient with Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease: a Case Report.
Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a progressive systemic fibrosing disease that may occur after gadolinium contrast exposure. It can lead to severe complications and even death. NSF is highly prevalent among patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). ⋯ The medical history revealed that he was exposed to gadolinium 185 days earlier, and the result of his tibial skin biopsy was consistent with NSF. The patient underwent a combined therapy with ultraviolet-A1 phototherapy and methotrexate and steroid therapy for 6 months. The combined therapy stopped the systemic progression of NSF.

Case ReportsCharacteristics of Acute Stroke in Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 and Challenges in Stroke Management during an Epidemic.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an ongoing pandemic infection associated with high morbidity and mortality. The Korean city of Daegu endured the first large COVID-19 outbreak outside of China. Since the report of the first confirmed case in Daegu on February 18, 2020, a total of 6,880 patients have been reported until May 29, 2020. ⋯ As a result, acute treatment for ischemic stroke was delayed. The present case series report raises the possibility that the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 causes or worsens stroke, perhaps by inducing inflammation. The control of COVID-19 is very important; however, early and proper management of stroke should not be neglected during the epidemic.

Impact of Molecular Drug Susceptibility Testing on the Time to Multidrug-resistant Tuberculosis Treatment Initiation.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current status and trends in the coverage of molecular drug susceptibility testing (mDST), and the impact of mDST on the time to multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment initiation in Korea. ⋯ mDST coverage is gradually increasing and contributes to reducing the time to MDR-TB treatment initiation. Further efforts are needed to achieve universal access to mDST and to properly integrate mDST into routine clinical practice.

Characteristics of Ocular Manifestations of Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 in Daegu Province, Korea.
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has reportedly affected almost 23 million people, with more than 800 thousand deaths globally. There have been a few reports on the ocular manifestations of COVID-19 patients in China but no reports in Korea. The present study aimed to examine ocular manifestations of COVID-19 patients in Korea. ⋯ Positive upper respiratory infection symptoms and lower creatine phosphokinase were determined to be related to ocular symptoms in COVID-19 patients. Among these patients, positive upper respiratory infection symptoms were associated with conjunctival congestion.
