ReviewCOVID-19 Outbreak in Daegu City, Korea and Response to COVID-19: How Have We Dealt and What Are the Lessons?
The first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in Daegu city was overcome by efforts, including; 1) prompt isolation and quarantine action by local government with cooperative help from expert groups and the central government, 2) high-intensity social distancing and active cooperation of citizens, 3) admission of asymptomatic and mild patients in 'residential treatment centers', and 4) use of a telephone scoring system for the allocation of patients, with a mortality rate of 2.5%. A continuous suppression policy with test, tracing, and treatment (3 Ts) was implemented as an active response to the initial outbreaks in Korea. ⋯ Since the omicron outbreak, a damage mitigation policy has been implemented, focusing on protecting vulnerable groups. In the future, preparation including below are needed; 1) improving the national public health emergency response system, 2) strengthening the crisis response capacity of local governments, 3) cooperation between public healthcare and private healthcare, and 4) establishing a resilient medical response system.

The preventable trauma death rate survey is a basic tool for the quality management of trauma treatment because it is a method that can intuitively evaluate the level of national trauma treatment. We conducted this study as a national biennial follow-up survey project and report the results of the review of the 2019 trauma death data in Korea. ⋯ The preventable trauma death rate for trauma deaths in 2019 was 15.7%, which was 4.2%p lower than that in 2017. To improve the quality of trauma treatment, the transfer of severe trauma patients to trauma centers should be more focused.

Improving the Prognosis of Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke Treated in the Late Time Window After the Introduction of Advanced Imaging Software: Benefits From Thrombectomy in the Extended Time Window.
Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) of ischemic stroke was recommended as a clinical guideline in 2015, and the indication for time was expanded in 2018 based on two clinical studies. We aimed to compare and analyze the prognosis of patients treated under the extended time indication before and after the introduction of advanced software. ⋯ The number of patients with ischemic stroke who receive MT has increased by using advanced imaging software. It was confirmed that patients treated based on the extended time indication also had a good prognosis.

Demographic and Genome Wide Association Analyses According to Muscle Mass Using Data of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study.
Sarcopenia is commonly found in the elderly due to a decline in muscle mass. Many researchers have performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to find genetic risk factors of sarcopenia. Although many studies have discovered sarcopenia associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), most of them are studies targeting Caucasians. The purpose of this study was to evaluate genetic correlation according to muscle mass in middle aged Koreans using data of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KOGES), a large population-based genomic cohort study. ⋯ In the demographic study, significant results were found in BMI, waist, hip, history of hyperlipidemia, and sedentary life status in male group, and significant results were found in BMI, waist, hip, and hypertension history in female group. Variant rs11189312 was found to be a novel variant affecting ZFYVE27 expressed in skeletal muscles, suggesting that rs11189312 might be related to sarcopenia as a novel discovery of this study. Further study is needed to determine the association between sarcopenia and ZFYVE27 known to be associated with spastic paraplegia.
