Multicenter StudyPotential Utility of Fecal Calprotectin in Discriminating Colorectal Polyps From Other Major Etiologies in Children Presenting With Isolated Hematochezia.
Colorectal polyps are the most common cause of isolated hematochezia in children, which requires a colonoscopy for diagnosis. We aimed to investigate the potential utility of fecal calprotectin (FC) in assessing colorectal polyps detected by colonoscopy among children presenting with isolated hematochezia. ⋯ FC may assist in assessing the cause of lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding in children who present with isolated hematochezia.

Surgically Metabolic Resection of Pericardial Fat to Ameliorate Myocardial Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Acute Myocardial Infarction Obese Rats.
Pericardial fat (PF) is highly associated with cardiovascular disease but the effectiveness of surgical resection of PF is still unknown for myocardial mitochondrial structure and function in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with obesity. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the difference in myocardial mitochondrial structure and function between obese AMI with additionally resected PF and those without resected PF. ⋯ Surgical resection of PF might ameliorate myocardial mitochondria dysfunction in obese AMI.

The Effects of Intravenous Fluid Viscosity on the Accuracy of Intravenous Infusion Flow Regulators.
Intravenous infusion flow regulators (IIFRs) are widely used devices but it is unknown how much the difference between the IIFR scale and the actual flow rate depends on the viscosity of the intravenous (IV) fluid. This study evaluated the effects of viscosity on the flow rate of five IV fluids (0.9% normal saline, Hartmann's solution, plasma solution-A, 6% hetastarch, and 5% albumin) when using IIFRs. ⋯ When the IIFR scales were preset to 20, 100, and 250 mL/hr, crystalloids were delivered at the preset flow rate within a difference of less than 10%, while 6% hetastarch was delivered at approximately 40% of the preset flow rates and 5% albumin was approximately 80% transmitted. When delivering colloids, IIFRs should be used with caution.

Epidemiologic Characteristics and Case Fatality Rate of Vibrio vulnificus Infection: Analysis of 761 Cases From 2003 to 2016 in Korea.
Vibrio vulnificus infection is a highly fatal disease resulting from the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood and exposure to seawater containing the organism. It has been a nationally notifiable disease since 2000 in Korea. The aims of this study were to assess the trends in the incidence of V. vulnificus infection and its case fatality rate and to determine the epidemiologic characteristics to effectively prevent infection and lower mortality. ⋯ The occurrence of V. vulnificus infection showed distinct seasonality, with a large number of cases occurring in the months when the seawater temperature was high; there were also distinct geographical characteristics. The incidence of V. vulnificus infection and mortality rates have not decreased for decades, and it is still an important public health problem with a high fatality rate.

Observational StudyClinical Features of Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department With Cardiovascular Adverse Reactions After COVID-19 mRNA Vaccination.
Since the implementation of the nationwide coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination campaign, emergency departments (EDs) have had an increasing number of patients reporting postvaccination cardiovascular adverse effects. We investigated the clinical features of patients who visited the ED for cardiovascular adverse reactions after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. ⋯ Most patients who visited the ED with cardiovascular adverse reactions were discharged from the ED, but some were admitted for other medical diseases as well as adverse vaccine reactions. Therefore, further surveillance and a differential diagnosis of cardiovascular adverse events after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination should be considered by emergency physicians.
