Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical Trial
Combined use of erythrocyte zinc protoporphyrin and mean corpuscular volume in differentiation of thalassemia from iron deficiency anemia.
In a retrospective study the diagnostic value of erythrocyte zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) measurement as a means of distinguishing iron deficiency anemia from thalassemia syndromes in patients with microcytosis was explored. ZPP values were increased in all patients with iron deficiency and in part of the patients with thalassemia. ⋯ The predictive value of this method is better than the results obtained by using formulae derived from red cell indices. In population screening programs for thalassemia syndromes, in which MCV determination is used as the initial test, the ZPP test is recommended as a second test, in order to discriminate between patients with microcytosis due to iron deficiency and patients with microcytosis due to thalassemia syndromes.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial
A comparison between intravenous iron polymaltose complex (Ferrum Hausmann) and oral ferrous fumarate in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy.
Anaemia is the most common medical disorder in pregnancy with iron deficiency anaemia accounting for the majority of cases. Over 90% of the iron deficiency anaemia is due to red cell iron deficiency associated with depleted iron stores and deficient intake. The two main modalities of treating iron deficiency anaemia are oral or parenteral iron. ⋯ The results suggest that intravenous iron as a total dose infusion is able to replenish iron stores more efficiently, completely and at a faster rate than oral iron therapy, thus providing the fuel for stimulation of full erythopoiesis compared to oral iron. There were also no reports of any adverse reactions with intravenous iron dextrin, whereas there were a considerable proportion of women on oral iron therapy who reported side effects. In conclusion, intravenous iron therapy with Ferrous Hausmann (iron dextrin) is a suitable, effective and safe alternative to oral iron therapy in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy.

Multicenter Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical Trial
Outcome of a multicenter treatment program including autologous or allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for de novo acute myeloid leukemia.
The results of an intensive treatment program for patients 16-60 yr of age with de novo acute myeloid leukemia are presented. The patients were given conventional induction treatment with daunorubicin and cytarabine. Patients not entering complete remission (CR) after 1 course of daunorubicin/cytarabine were given 1 course of amsacrine/etoposide/cytarabine. ⋯ Leukemia-free survival was 35% for the whole cohort of patients; 52% for patients below 40 yr of age. Patients undergoing allogeneic or autologous bone marrow transplantation in first remission had an overall survival of 86% and 47%, respectively, while the probability of leukemia-free survival in these groups was 87% vs. 40% at 4 yr. The CR rate and long-term results of this intensive treatment program compare favorably with other recent studies using intensive consolidation with allogeneic or autologous bone marrow transplantation or high dose cytarabine.

The role of the immune system in the control of the production of erythropoietin is still poorly understood. Herein, the levels of circulating immunoreactive erythropoietin, tumour necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-1 beta and interleukin-6 were determined in 10 septic patients for up to 4 d following the admission to an internal intensive care unit. ⋯ The pattern of the serum erythropoietin level in the nonsurvivors resembled that of acute phase proteins and was independent of the blood haemoglobin concentration. Similar to interleukin 6, abnormally high serum erythropoietin levels appear to be a negative prognostic indicator in patients suffering from septic shock.

Comparative Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical Trial
Immune recovery after autologous or rhG-CSF primed PBSC transplantation.
We performed a prospective study in 17 consecutive patients following Autologous bone marrow (BM) or rhG-CSF primed peripheral blood item cell (PBSC) transplantation, with the objective of comparing immune recovery between both procedures and to evaluate results in rhG-CSF mobilized peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). Kinetics of immune reconstitution showed differences, with a faster recovery of CD3+ and CD8+ T cells, and a more rapid and sustained recovery of CD8+/-/CD56+ natural killer (NK) cells in the PBCSCT group. ⋯ Our results show differences in the rate and pattern of B and T lymphocytes reconstitution after ABMT and PBSCT. Additionally, we state an enhancement of CD56+ cells in patients undergoing PBSCT mobilized solely using rhG-CSF.
