Laser treatment for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) may be associated with systemic stress for the infant. No national consensus on the optimum method of anaesthesia for the treatment of ROP currently exists. This study ascertains the anaesthetic practices employed for the treatment of ROP by ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom (UK), and also their attitudes towards these practices. ⋯ This survey reveals considerable variation in practice among UK ophthalmologists regarding the anaesthetic methods employed in the treatment of ROP, and their beliefs regarding the systemic stress associated with treatment.

Tacrolimus ointment vs steroid ointment for eyelid dermatitis in patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis.
The main objective of this explorative study was to evaluate if tacrolimus ointment could be safer than corticosteroid ointment, with special reference to the intraocular pressure in the treatment of eyelid eczema in patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC). Secondary aims were to compare the effects of the treatments on eyelid eczema and their potential impact on ocular surface inflammation. ⋯ Tacrolimus 0.1% ointment is a promising alternative therapy for eyelid eczema in AKC patients. Long-term studies are needed to further determine the value of tacrolimus in this patient group.

In adults modern vitreoretinal surgery allows many traumatised eyes to be salvaged. However, one third of serious eye injuries occur in the paediatric age group and trauma is a leading cause of monocular blindness in childhood. This study aims to report the indications, complications and outcomes for vitreoretinal surgical intervention after childhood ocular trauma. ⋯ Vitreoretinal intervention resulted in an improvement in vision in 32 children (57.1%) and stabilised 11 at their presenting acuity (19.6%). Two thirds of the children attained a final VA of 6/60 or better. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy was the cause of redetachment in 68.2% of cases and was significantly associated with a poor outcome (P<0.0001).

To evaluate the adequacy of common disinfection regimens for disposable tonometer tips and assess if disinfection of reusable prisms or the use of disposable tips is preferable. ⋯ Results of our study demonstrate a relative disinfection efficacy for the different evaluated regimens, provided that correct exposure times are adopted for the chosen disinfectants, a condition difficult to ensure in a busy clinic setting. We conclude that disposable prism tonometry provides a safe alternative to Goldmann tonometry.
