SPECT-CT for topographic mapping of sentinel lymph nodes prior to gamma probe-guided biopsy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
Lymphoscintigraphic planar imaging is a common procedure for sentinel lymph node imaging prior to lymph node biopsy, but fails to elucidate the specific lymphatic drainage. Composite functional/anatomical imaging (SPECT-CT) has the potential to enhance topographic orientation and diagnostic sensitivity of sentinel lymph node imaging, but has not yet been applied in the head and neck region. ⋯ Composite functional/anatomical imaging (SPECT-CT) is feasible for sentinel lymph node detection. It enhances topographic orientation and diagnostic sensitivity with more sentinel nodes being detectable than by planar lymphoscintigraphy alone. Planar imaging should be accompanied by iterative reconstructed SPECT-CT to identify lymph nodes adjacent to the primary lesion. Such nodes are easily overlooked by planar lymphoscintigraphy and intraoperative gamma probes, as the high activity at the injection site can obscure their detection.

A three-dimensional computer model of the human mandible in two simulated standard trauma situations.
A three-dimensional finite element model of the human mandible was developed to simulate and analyse biomechanical behaviour in two standard trauma situations. This computer-based study was made to assess the stress patterns within human mandibles generated by impact forces. ⋯ The main application of this study was the prediction of fractures as a consequence of known forces.

Coronoidectomy in maxillary swing for reducing the incidence and severity of trismus--a reminder.
The maxillary swing approach is a proven method for access to the nasopharynx. However, often, trismus is incurred postoperatively, hampering adequate oral care and follow-up and affecting patients' quality of life. ⋯ Coronoidectomy, usually performed in maxillectomy for reducing trismus is a useful adjunct in the maxillary swing procedure.

The role of simultaneous gap arthroplasty and distraction osteogenesis in the management of temporo-mandibular joint ankylosis with mandibular deformity in children.
Temporo-mandibular joint ankylosis is a common cause of acquired deformity in children. ⋯ Distraction osteogenesis can be used simultaneously with gap arthroplasty in patients with temporo-mandibular ankylosis, for the correction of the mandibular deformity.
