Comparative StudyAneurysmal bone cysts of the jaws: clinicopathological features, radiographic evaluation and treatment analysis of 17 cases.
This article re-evaluates the various clinicopathological presentations and array of radiographic features displayed by aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) of the jaws. In this retrospective clinical study, 17 cases of ABCs of the jaws surgically treated during an 11-year period from 1986-1997 are evaluated. The age and sex distribution, diagnostic characteristics, mode of treatment and long-term surgical results are presented and compared with the international literature. ⋯ Restoration of facial symmetry and bone formation has been favourable in all patients, despite the fact that grafts were not used. This 11-year study shows that ABCs present with varied clinicopathological and radiographic features and thus may pose a diagnostic dilemma. As we have not noted any recurrences following surgical curettage of mandibular lesions, we feel that initial surgical resection or bone grafting is not necessary, provided that adequate access and complete curettage can be obtained.

Case ReportsCraniofacial access to the anterior and middle cranial fossae and skull base.
A profusion of surgical approaches to gain access to the anterior and middle cranial fossa and skull base have been described. An attempt has been made to simplify the position by suggesting a classification of surgical approaches and to describe a standard approach (of at most 4 defined osteotomies, or at least 2) to give a craniofacial approach to the anterior and middle cranial fossae, the infratemporal fossa, the orbit and the superior nasal cavity. The full extent of the osteotomies have been likened to an ancient Corinthian face mask, or to the stylized face-mask worn by the comic book hero, Batman.

Review Case ReportsUse of streptomycin-lidocaine injections in the treatment of the cluster-tic syndrome. Clinical perspectives and a case report.
Trigeminal neuralgia and cluster headache syndrome are complex pain conditions of the craniofacial region. Both diseases can coexist in the same patient, comprising the cluster-tic syndrome. This article reviews the literature on this condition and reports a new case who responded well to peripheral streptomycin-lidocaine injections.

Hemifacial degloving approach to tumours in the infratemporal and pterygopalatine fossae: a preliminary report.
A new approach to tumours in the infratemporal or pterygopalatine fossa is presented. Through a midline skin incision, one side of the face from the forehead to the neck is completely degloved. Zygomatic and mandibular osteotomies improve access. ⋯ This approach provides a widely exposed field from the temporal fossa to the neck without damage to major vessels or nerves other than the supra- and infraorbital nerves. Direct access to tumours in the infratemporal or pterygopalatine fossa is facilitated, thus making tumour resection easier, safer and more reliable. Details of this approach are described.

Case ReportsCraniofacial osteotomies to facilitate resection of large tumours of the anterior skull base.
Large tumours of the anterior cranial fossa can be a major challenge to the neurosurgeon or the maxillofacial surgeon. However, skull base approaches facilitate their resection. We describe our experience with the extended subfrontal approach in treating tumours of the anterior cranial base. ⋯ Reconstruction of the anterior cranial base should be meticulous to avoid cerebrospinal fluid leaks and subsequent meningitis. Loss of smell is a sequel to this approach. The possible risks and some important technical details are highlighted.
