Lifestyle interventions promoting weight loss and physical activity are important elements of prevention efforts with the evaluation of program impact typically limited to weight loss. Unfortunately, diabetes/cardiovascular disease risk factors and activity are infrequently reported and inconsistent in findings when examined. This inconsistency may partially be due to a lack of consideration for ceiling effects because of broad risk profile inclusion criteria in community translation efforts. To demonstrate this, change in each individual cardiometabolic risk factor limited to those who, at baseline, had a clinically defined abnormal value for that risk factor was examined in 2 cohorts using identical community translations of the Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle intervention. ⋯ When examining the effectiveness of community translation efforts, consideration of the individual's baseline profile with risk factor-specific analysis is suggested to understand the full extent of the impact of the intervention.

The purpose of this study is to determine the association between Medicaid expansion in Louisiana and cancer mortality by race and sex. ⋯ Medicaid expansion in Louisiana was associated with a reduction in cancer mortality for Black female and male adults. Estimates of the association between Medicaid expansion and cancer mortality in Louisiana directly relate to the potential impacts for states that have yet to adopt Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, which are primarily located in the Southern U.S.

Despite ongoing efforts to vaccinate communities against COVID-19, the necessity of face mask use in controlling the pandemic remains subject to debate. Several studies have investigated face masks and COVID-19, covering smaller and less diverse populations than this study's sample. This study examines a hypothesized association of face-covering mandates with COVID-19 mortality decline across 44 countries in 2 continents. ⋯ This study's significant results show that face mask mandates were associated with lower COVID-19 deaths rates than the rates in countries without mandates. These findings support the use of face masks to prevent excess COVID-19 deaths and should be advised during airborne disease epidemics.

Interventions to curb the spread of COVID-19 during the 2020-2021 influenza season essentially eliminated influenza during that season. Given waning antibody titers over time, future residual population immunity against influenza will be reduced. The implication for the subsequent 2021-2022 influenza season is unknown. ⋯ Given the light 2020-2021 influenza season, cases may increase by as much as 50% in 2021-2022, although the increase could be much less, depending on cross-immunity from past infection and transmissibility of strains. Enhanced vaccine coverage or continued interventions to reduce transmission could reduce this high season. Young children may have a higher risk in 2021-2022 owing to limited exposure to infection in the previous year.
