A Delphi study to develop the Association for Palliative Medicine consensus syllabus for undergraduate palliative medicine in Great Britain and Ireland.
The Association for Palliative Medicine (APM) produced a previous undergraduate palliative medicine syllabus in 1992. This study describes the process of developing the new APM consensus syllabus against the background of changes in medical education and palliative medicine since 1992. The syllabus was derived by means of a Delphi study carried out amongst experts in palliative medicine across Britain and Ireland. ⋯ Learning outcomes are categorised as essential or desirable. Using a Delphi study, we have developed a consensus syllabus for undergraduate palliative medicine. This is sufficiently flexible to allow all medical schools to ensure that their students achieve the essential learning outcomes by the time they graduate, whereas those with more generous curricular space will additionally be able to deliver selected desirable learning outcomes.

Multicenter StudyRacial disparity in hospice use in the United States in 2002.
We used complete Centers for Disease Control death certificate records and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services 100% Standard Analytic File for hospice claims for 2002 to examine differences in hospice utilization between African-American and white decedents living in the United States. White decedents were more likely to use hospice in the year before their death than African-American decedents (29% vs 22%). ⋯ Hospice utilization was lower among African-American than among white decedents in 31 of 40 states. The higher the overall hospice utilization in a state, the less the positive difference between white and African-American usage rates; that is, the more accepted hospice is, as measured by 'market share', the lower the racial disparity in its use.
